As was probably to be expected, Flick had gotten up early for her first class, and had spent a fair while preparing things. With the early re-organisation of the Potions store rooms to her standards, she had found it relatively easy to get things ready, and sitting on the main demonstration desk at the front sat a fairly large cauldron bubbling away. Around each of the main work tables, there were small ones and some cauldron heaters - a relatively new invention that had come to Australia, but used more in America for precise heating.

The previous teacher of Potions must have had a particular way of laying out the room, and so it had been yesterday when the Russian-descended brunette had taken to the tables with fairly strong magic and had to blast out screws holding them in place to the floor so Flick could realign them.

A simple repair spell had corrected the damage and none of them were wobbly anymore. She could hear the sounds of people outside and grinned, pulling out her wand as she leant against one of the book cases. The door to Potions opened and students began filing in carrying their cauldrons, books & supplies.

"Okay everyone, take a seat."

Aiming her wand and giving it a flick of her wrist, Flick caused the sheet of papers to rise up and quickly flitter out, changing into different animals and begin jumping across the room to each of the students before collapsing back into neat sheets, "Take a class overview sheet."

Once all the students had entered, Flick made her way to the centre of the room, "For those of you who don't know me, I am Professor Flick Petrovna, the new Potions master here at the school, and I am assuming that you are all her for Potions, one of the core subjects. If you've got the wrong room, now would be the time to try to get to your right one before you get in trouble. "

Giving a moment, Flick continued, "Good. So in this class, you will be learning how to make potions, mainly by brewing but not always, and it is definitely both a theoretical & practical class."

Waving her wand at the main cauldron, she swished it and from one the desk, a series of vials shot up into the air, uncorked themselves and then shot out across the room & upended themselves into the small cauldrons on desks. In the middle, another vial spun up and dumped its contents into the main one.

Flames burst out of each of the small cauldrons with each being a different color - reds, blues, yellows, purples, and the middle demo table one shot out violets sparks as a green blobby mass burst upwards in the shape of an elephant.

"As you will find out, there are commonalities in the way different potion makers brew potions, but often, there can be different ways to get to a common result & there is experimentation. Each of those flames is made by different ingredients."

Waving her wand, she caused the flames to snuff out and she smiled, "So, I would love to know what you as students are interested in."

Tying her dark brown hair back messily, Hine took the last few metres of the path to the potions class at a jog, balancing a new looking cauldron atop a text book, she found a seat near the middle of the class, and began unpacking. Once Professor Petrovna started speaking though, she took her seat, opening her book and raising her quill, a fairly simple and worn affair.

The dark skinned student watched the display, scratching down some notes about the various colours, and some thoughts on each one, trying to devise the way each would be done, thinking back to the long hours of potion making back home, under her mother's tutelage. Hine had been home schooled until last month, and the focus of most of her education had been on these arts, leaving some broad gaps in her knowledge. Enough that she had been put into fifth year rather than sixth as her age would normally allow. But potions and herbs? That she knew.

The Kiwi student continued to listen, occasionally looking around to take in the other students with varying levels of interest in the proceedings. At the question though Hine's hand shot up.

"Do we get independent study time?" Her New Zealand accent came through clearly. "Cos I'd like to really nail the Draught of Peace this year, I feel like I'm pretty close."

After a moment's silence she self-consciously sunk back into her chair, retreating into her blue and copper uniform. She should have let others talk first, her mum had told her that.

Samhain took a deep breath, rifling through her bag once more as she approached the Potions classroom. She didn't much like the Underground Hallway, it made her feel claustrophobic, like she was under miles and miles of stone. But unfortunately, Potions class was held down there, and there was no getting out of it.

The girl slipped into the classroom, slinking to a seat before looking around. She felt almost naked; she'd had to leave Bumble up in her Dorm, for fear of the little beast falling ill from Potions fumes. In her arms instead was her cauldron, filled with the books she'd need as well as her Potions kit.

She set her cauldron down, before looking around the classroom. There was a large cauldron already bubbling, a potion inside of it, and numerous cauldron heaters were placed around the room.

The girl was startled as a hare made of paper suddenly hopped onto her desk, but couldn't help but to smile. That was... pretty cool, she'd have to admit. She was quick to read over it once it unfolded, looking back up as the woman began to speak.

The Sturt student nearly went out of her skin as the cauldrons suddenly began to burn, flinching without meaning to. Samhain hated sudden movements, especially ones to do with dangerous things, like fire.

She waited for another girl to speak, relieved when the professor put out the fires, before raising her hand to speak. "I-I'm in-interested in-in he-healing po-potions." she said simply, before staring down at her cauldron, cheeks flushing crimson.

Flick smiled as a girl in the middle put her hand up, who she remembered was Hine from going through the class list earlier with its pictures of the students, and spoke in a New Zealand accent. It was a good question, and something she realized that she should have mentioned.

"Aye, that is a very good question, Hine, and thank you for asking. When there are no other classes scheduled in here and I'm not busy or that you are supposed to be in other classes, then you are welcome to come in. Some of you will be doing that potion in Term 2."

Flick pointed over to a small tiger statue near the door by itself on a bench, "Just touch the tiger statue over there and it will let me know. By the way, you can expect all sorts of tiger things in here.  Also, I plan to run a few clubs - one for enthusiasts & one that does tree and rock removal via potions."

Flick had noticed a few of the students jump or startle during her demos earlier, and had felt a little bad about that. The next student to speak, Samhain, had been one of those, and Flick smiled at the girl as she answered, "You will have a chance for that."

Using some wandless magic, she spoke softly to cast a revealing spell, making gold wording appear on the board showing two listings on the board with the left one being of the class outline for the year, "Both of these are in the syllabus you have been given. We will be doing particular themes across each term and I've split the year levels into three different groupings as it works better. Term 3 will be investigating the use of potions as medicines, with a range of antidotes & a healing one."

She then took a breath before continuing, "And on the right is the marking breakdown that Potions uses. Half of the class is practical in the form of turning up, trying to participate, practicals and short answer homework. The rest is essays, pop quizzes, and a final exam. The exam is only twenty-five percent so if you do well enough in everything else, you could technically just write 'I am a fish' over & over in it and still pass - not that I advise that."

Siwan slipped in just before she would have been late. She had lingered in her previous class too long, rewriting some notes before the board was cleared. She sat down in time though, to see the flames and the cauldrons flare up.

"Im interested to see how the modification and adjustment of ingredients and preparation methods change the effectiveness of the potion."

She had always enjoyed changing little things about her casting, but there had always been very little room for her to adjust when making potions. Any deviance has been a mark off of her grade, but if there was room left for her to adjust, then that was always good.

Flick had noticed the girl who had slipped into the room, who she remembered was Siwan, and didn't mind actually. As long as people turned up at some point, Flick would be fine and they would be able to catch up.

Grinning to Siwan, Flick nodded "That is something I do quite a lot, and some of the details on Mayan potions are lost to time. But we did manage to reverse everything caused during testing and trials. Which reminds me.. No tasting or trying on potions yourself or attempt to poison others unless I tell you its okay. I won't let anyone accidentally grow tails, horns or purple spots, okay? But seriously, one thing that you should all remember is that at some point, every potion in existence would have been unknown and developed by experimentation. There may have been starting points already, but still. And not all of them came from wizards and witches either. We have a lot of potions that come from Muggles, and I even know a really good potion researcher named George who is a squib."

Flick then smiled, "Okay now I think is a good time. On your sheets, have a look through the class room rules and let me know if there is anything you don't understand or have a query on. And does anyone have any other questions? Once you have all understood that, we can start on the first potions for the year."

Naoki scowled as he looked at his watch, realizing he was fairly late. It had taken him ages to find the Potions Classroom, and he'd finally had to ask a wayward student. The student, however, had found it funny to send him as far away from the classroom as one could get without leaving the campus. Finally, another student had taken pity on him and directed him to the classroom.

The boy slipped into the classroom, throwing an apologetic grin at the teacher. "Sorry ma'am, got some 嘘 directions to your classroom. I'm new." Then he strode over to a nearby desk, and sat down, putting out his supplies. Once he was done, he quickly read through the classroom rules. He finished that, and waited for class to get truly started.

Flick smiled as the seventh year she remembered as Naoki came in, and was glad that he was apologetic, "That's fine." One of the small paper animals, a giraffe-like one, bounded across the room and jumped up onto the bench Naoki had gone to before flattening out into a sheet & diving in front of him.

Flick moved to the front, "Okay. So, because we have a few different levels of students in this room, we will be working on a few different potions. The lower levels will be doing a Cure for Boils on page 56 from Magical Drafts and Potions, the next level is doing a couple of medieval era potions from A Collection of Above Three Hundred Receipts - page 99 to 101 has a strong palfey-water, and page 104 has a Drink for any inward bruife or wound. The higher levels will be doing the Draught of Living Death on page 10 of Advanced Potion-Making. Opening up your books and have a look through them before you begin. I'll be moving around to check on you and call out if you have questions."

Flick pointed over to a table where she had put some extra supplies that would be needed, "I've put out some supplies of antidotes and waking potions just in case. The Tallygarunga Potion Kits have the common ingredients that will be needed for these recipes and up on the main bench, I've got out the extra extra specialized ingredients you will need."

Hine nodded at the questions, and once instructions were given, she cleared her workspace, ensuring that the area was perfectly empty and dry. She gave a very careful look over her cauldron, ensuring there was not any cracks or chips, or anything else that could interfere with the potion she was going to be making.
She wasn't usually this focused when it came to... well anything. But she was raised by a potion maker, and this had become a ritual. Perfection had been expected, and drilled into her, and she wasn't going to stop just because she was in a new environment.
Also, due to that same training, when she made her way over to the ingredients she collected a wide-eye potion as well as a wiggenweld potion before any other ingredient.
"Safety. First." She whispered to herself, before beginning her collection.

She laid out her ingredients. The Valerian and asphodel were in her kit, and the wormwood infusion she had set going when she had arrived at the school looked ready to go. The sopophorus beans and sloth brain were among the things she had got from the 'specialised' ingredients area.

And so she began. She started by setting a short burrette with a funnel to the side of her workstation, crushing the beans with her work knife above so she could measure the amount of juice later in the procedure. Once she had cut enough, the remaining beans were put aside into a "to be returned" pile. She removed the funnel and stoppered the long piece of glassware. That juice could straight up wipe your memory, and she didn't want to risk that. Finally, the young woman measured out every ingredient, and lined them up in order.

She added the base water, a filtered and purified spring water first, and then the infusion of wormwood, putting the dirty measuring cup to the side. The powdered lily root followed the same procedure, and a slow steady clockwise stir, then a second. The brain was lowered into the cauldron, and heat was added to the base of the cauldron, and Hine waited for the potion to settle. The juice was added, as the heat was removed, and seven slow turns, each one slower than the last as though Hine was falling into a deep slumber. She wasn't sure the resonance would matter, but as she watched the purple mixture clarify to a clear mixture, she privately congratulated herself that it had been worth it.

It was only then did she realise that she was probably supposed to be making one of the other potions for the lower years.
"Tutai" she cursed, louder than she had meant.

Orion wasn't as late to class as he'd expected to be. Potions was one of those classes that, to someone like him, was akin to cooking.

So he stood in class, flipping through his text, looking for the Draught of Living Death. It was one of those Potions that everyone wanted to get right on the first try. It was one thing to flub up a potion. It was another to flub up this potion. And he had melted many a cauldron in his fifth year because he had been so unfamiliar with potions.

But now he was getting better. He had a better understanding of how these things worked. So he could grab his basket, collect his supplies and measure things carefully. These things couldn't be half-assed.

It also helped to park himself next to a brainy student. So he parked himself next to one of the brainy kids, started the cauldron fire and read through the ingredient list one last time.

"Just like chemistry. Just like chemistry. Don't blow it up." It was becoming a mantra for him, but at least he was understanding it.

Hine leaned over to where Orion was beginning to Mantra out of his mind. She shouldn't interfere, she knew that. But then, without thinking, she was offering advice in a low voice.
"Hey, Bro. If you are doing the Living Death, you wanna turn down that cauldron. Otherwise the Wormwood will boil off before you get the brain in there."
She pointed at the flame underneath the cauldron, and gave a lopsided smile. "A cooked brain isn't a good brain, I'll tell you. Nek minit you'll have a soupy mess that doesn't do anything except make your eyelids droop."

Heading over to Orion as the others got ready, Flick smiled to him, "Don't worry, you can catch up. Here is a copy of the syllabus, marking break down and the class rules for OH&S. Any questions?"

Flick had been moving around the tables, answering questions and checking things, only pointing out issues where it could be dangerous or making suggestions when asked. Stopping near Siwan, Flick suggested, "For this one, there are a few different ways to get to the end if you want to try."

Circling around, Flick picked up a smell from one of the tables that caused her to smile. It brought back memories of her own experiences, and how she had been told off the first time - which had made her feel bad. It was one thing that she never wanted to do to someone else.

Coming over to Hine's table quietly, Flick silently watched as the fifth year girl stirred the potion the requisite number of times and it then turned clear. It was wonderful to see, because there were a lot of others struggling.

Taking out one of the leaves from her pouch, Flick moved up and eaning over, she dropped the leaf in and it quickly disappeared in it, "Very nice potion you have there, Hine. Definitly an outstanding, so 2 points to Sturt." as Flick smiled, "Don't worry, okay? I used to do the same thing when I was here. How about you try one of the fifth year ones while you have time?"

Hine gave a very small smile, almost shyly while the professor was there, her previous confidence quickly retreating. She mumbled a thank you quietly and then looked up at the board, squinting.
Palfrey Water, that's a quick one. And it is mostly a distillation, so she could do that almost by rote. She took the few minutes to bottle her draught of the living death, labelling it carefully and packing it away into her potions kit, before cleaning and drying her cauldron, and getting a metal alembic. She looked at the recipe. This used a huge volume of liquid, and that wouldn't do, not in the lessened time at the end of class. With her scratch pad she began to rework the potion to a smaller amount, even a tenth measure would use a half gallon of base fluid, but looking at the clock she thought she would be able to work it in enough time.
She began running the half-gallon of sherry through the alembic, letting it collect once it had distilled into her cauldron, the runoff going into a large pot. The low heat underneath the cauldron began to bubble the sweet smelling liquid, and Hine was faintly reminded that she had missed lunch that day. Oh well.
As she pulled the herbs together, she worked them with the pestal and mortar, just enough to break the herbs but not enough to crush them. Her mother had told her that when you needed to rush a potion, you could do that to make them absorb faster, and she hoped it would work in this case. As the foam began to form at the surface of the potion, she removed the heat, and moved the herb mix into the frothy spirits, using a cooling charm to begin to condense the potion. A quick rinse of the alembic, and she began to ready the potion for its finally distillation.
It looked like she was going to make it after all, and with a sweet drink to calm her upset stomach as well. Sweet as.

Samhain grinned slightly, glad to hear they'd be doing healing potions at some point. She was quick to flip to the proper page, and beamed when she realized it was, indeed, a healing potion.

She quickly retrieved the ingredients she would need: Wormwood, Comfrey, Throatwort, Wood-Betony, Plantain, Mugwort, Bonewort, Scabious, Avens, Wild Huny-fuckle, Agrimony, Bramble-buds, Cinquefoil, Spearmint, Sanicle, White-bottle, Ribwort, Daify-roots, Dandelion, Ruglofs, and Hautborn-buds.

The girl put them into the cauldron, before adding two quarts of White-wine and a gallon of running water. She set the fire until the cauldron, and waited for it to boil.
