There was no better time to decide to take on the challenge of going up the wall set at the Lakes, or so Jo thought, it was her day off and she wanted to do something that didn’t involve being inside, while she enjoyed it, she had enough for the next couple of weeks, the punishment had been enough to make her dislike being inside for long periods of time. However, desk work had its perks, fewer hours, knowing all about the office gossip, knowing who was entangled with who, she could listen to the radio all she wanted, and she could even improve on her Origami skills, something she couldn’t do if she was on the field. Not everything was as bad as it seemed, aside from all the rules she had to follow, or at least implied rules of civilized people, meant she couldn’t steal food from the office fridge, or food that had a label on saying to who it belonged to.

The Dhampir stopped by her house to get on some sun screen, just because it was winter didn’t mean she didn’t burn, her skin was still sensitive enough to make her look like a boiled lobster at the end of the day.

Getting to the lakes was the easy part, climbing would be fairly easy too assuming she wasn’t going to break anything, because if she did, Ash will never stop mocking her about the time she ripped off something from the giant wall. First things first, Jo took a walk around the location, trying to get a sense of who was there and who wasn’t. Even in her day off Jo couldn’t stop doing what she did for a living, which was making sure everything was safe. It could be an instinct thing, she didn’t like to be caught off guard or to be surprised, things could get pretty violent if it was to happen something similar.

Looking up at the wall, Jo gathered all the preparations to start climbing it, she would have gone with no support but she didn’t want to call too much attention to herself, she wanted to blend in with the rest of the people. She began climbing the wall like she did that on a regular basis, the support was pretty must useless for her, but she did use it as an excuse after she pulled one of the supports for the hands accidentally and let it fall to the ground before continuing to climb the wall.

29 year old Halfbreed Veela ☆ She/Her

It was rare when Evelyn was let go of work so early - a blessing, if anything, given the absolute disarray the Auror department had been in for the past several months. She was determined to enjoy the afternoon off and made her way home to kick relaxation off with a nice cup of warm tea; her plans were thwarted as she saw her daughter ready to head out the door, having scheduled to meet with a few friends over the 'Just Do It June!' initiative running through the little town. It was something she thought the girl should most definitely do, and she offered to walk her to the Narrie Lakes - any extra moments spent with her daughter were moments well spent.

The walk had been a bit too slow for her liking. The chilly weather was biting at her skin, something the half-Veela didn't particularly enjoy. While she had initially thought of just Apparating to the location, as she usually did, Evelyn felt like it would be counterproductive to shirk a long walk given the theme of the month; she walked her daughter all the way to the adult jungle gym installed upon the premises, and felt an inner sense of relief when noticing Amber was a part of that meeting. If there was anyone she could entrust her daughter with, it was her, in a roundabout way; even if she was a particularly boisterous individual, she was family, and Evelyn knew she'd do anything to keep Alyona safe if push came to shove.

Bidding farewell to the small group, the blonde decided to take a gander at the various activities spread out around her immediate vicinity. It was impossible not to get her attention stolen by the gigantic structure placed near the water, and hazel eyes idly followed its walls upwards to their peak. Closer to the sun was a thing she'd like to be. Perhaps she should give the challenge a shot? She didn't think she'd have much difficulty with it in the first place.

As she approached the wall, she noticed an individual had started taking on the challenge by herself; a particularly familiar one at that. "Would you say that if you jumped off the top, you'd make it down in one piece?" She announced her presence with a little joke, an amused smile splaying across her lips as she watched the fellow Auror make her way up. Jumping off the top in such a manner would likely be a very bad idea for potential Muggle onlookers, but who was Evelyn not to at least entertain such an idea?

As she spoke, she saw one of the small rocks fall off the wall, broken off its base with the strength Jo had put it under. She caught it without much difficulty, bouncing it upwards off her palm a few times afterwards. She couldn't help but find the situation highly humorous.

Shortly after she had started her climbing Jo looked at the familiar voice that filled her ears, not only that, the scent the woman carried was easily recognizable by the young Dhampir. Jo held herself with one hand before looking at Evelyn with a smile while her other hand was dangling down her body almost like a doll.

“If it isn’t Evelyn, my favourite co-worker.” Jo joked, before she continued to climb, always looking down to watch the woman. While Jo had nothing against the woman, she knew her sister had a thing for the woman when they were younger, which was amusing. Jo only had one fixation over how silky and pretty the woman’s hair was, and that was something that was usually known considering Jo’s less stealthy ways of enjoying things. Jo opted to continued to climb and to reply to Evelyn later, she really wanted to reach the top of the wall and then slide down the rope.

She quickly got to the top, even after breaking a piece of the wall and then it was time to slide down the rope like she was Indiana Jones sliding down to an excavation site to dig some mysterious artefact and almost condemn human kind. Her feet hit the ground right in front of Evelyn with no effort and watch the blonde play with the piece of the wall that Jo had accidentally broken. “What brings you to the lakes today? Family activity? Work?” she spoke in a playful manner, almost as if she was teasing her own co-worker. She didn’t know much about Evelyn, except that she wasn’t a bad co-worker, she was helpful, and Jo enjoyed her ideas and opinions, perhaps had a little obsession with tea and tea puns.

“Oh, and I could have jumped, but sadly I don’t want to end up in jail or dead.” She knew the display of her abilities could cause her a lot of trouble, this wasn’t the simple task of tackling a muggle, this was displaying super human abilities that muggles couldn’t comprehend with their feeble minds and bodies, that would be splattered across the floor if one of them decided to pull that stunt. “Would you fancy a drink?”

Evelyn's smile widened as the little joke was batted back her way, playing it all up as her eyebrow raised suggestively for just a moment. As Jo made her way down, the blonde looked around to see if anyone's eyes were on them; with a little Legilimency to ensure there were no Muggles present, Evelyn tossed the little rock in her hand upwards after catching it, and after a wave frontwards of her finger, the platform flew back to where it once had been and latched itself back on the wall, as if it had never fallen to begin with.

"If they serve tea around here, I'll very much take you up on your offer, thank you. At least they should, it's not exactly known to be harmful..." Nothing too sugary would do; she didn't want to, however, repeat the mistake that was consuming bubble tea at the behest of her younger family members. Fruit juice was also a possibility, she figured, but it didn't hold a candle to the beverage of the Gods in her opinion.

"But to answer your question, that would be 'family activity', as you put it." She glanced over towards her daughter, whom was playing around in the jungle gym along with her friends and family. "Alyona wanted to meet with some friends and I brought her over, but you stole my attention. Quite the performance you were putting there." She spoke while finally directing her gaze back at the Dhampir. It didn't hurt to flatter, after all.

"By all means, lead the way."

“They probably have tea?” Jo wasn’t too sure how to reply to that, but the woman did have an unhealthy relationship with that type of beverage, sounded like one of those stereotypical British people that the only thing they wanted to drink was tea and more tea. Maybe if they didn’t have tea there could be something else that Evelyn would enjoy, Jo herself wasn’t too into tea, sure a cup of tea at night before bed to help one relax was good, and she did enjoy it if it was accompanied by some snacks, but drinking it socially? What happened to the good old beer?

The only family person Jo sees on a regular basis is her sister, and even then, it’s a bit hard to set her eyes on the oldest child of the Estrada family. Jo’s work can be complicated with the lack of Aurors but she still tried to make it work, perhaps if she didn’t put in so many extra hours she could actually spend more time with her sister instead of raiding her kitchen at night. “She seems to be enjoying herself.” Jo commented as she looked at Evelyn’s daughter.

Jo led the way up to one of the stands, she tried to pick the one that had a herbal scent, it seemed to be the most logical choice, if they smelled like herbs it meant that they probably had some tea. “How’s everything? Good I hope.” Not that Jo cared much for Evelyn’s family or how she was doing, it was irrelevant, but it seemed to be a custom most people followed, and it was only polite to do so, not to mention it was simply not to make that an awkward silence, after all Jo did invite the older woman for something to drink, only fair that she would offer some topic of conversation as well.

Reaching the stand, Jo asked if they served some tea, upon a positive answer she ordered herself some beer and waited for Evelyn to order herself some tea.

"Yes. She has very good friends." Or a very protective family, depending on who was asked - even if not expressed publicly, Evelyn had a secret hand at vetting her daughter's friends. She didn't want her child to be hurt by people who cared little for anything but themselves, and that was why she was more than okay with the girl being so close to Amber in the first place - if there was someone who lived with her heart on her sleeve and would die for Alyona, it was her.

The pair made their way to the stands. Jo had chosen one in particular that seemed to sell tea. Who was Evelyn to ever doubt a Dhampir's nose? "Well, it's been, what's the word... hectic? As I'm sure you know." It was starting to get under the blonde's skin, even if she didn't want to admit it - it had been well over half a year since the Auror Force had been turned upside down and they were still scrambling to make sense of things. It also threw a wrench into her ascension up the career ladder; but, if anything, if she were to catch a certain person herself, she'd be guaranteed a promotion or three.

As she received some tea from the stand's employee upon request and paid for the beverage, she watched Jo pour herself some beer with amusement etched upon her face. "I thought it was meant to be a healthy event." She couldn't resist the jab, but the smile on her lips indicated she was merely joking. "Or are you making fun of the rest of us by stating you can afford to drink that on top of your fitness?"

It was good that the woman thought that her friend was in good hands, or temporarily or else she would have just dropped the young girl and leave, like many others do that to their children, some even let them go alone. It’s a small town, while accidents and bad things can still happen the chances of that occurring is small, at least compared to Melbourne.

When Evelyn finally answered, Jo nodded in agreement. Sure, the extra hours were nice, and it had been what allowed her to pay her debt from her studio in Melbourne, but she wasn’t sure if she could keep up the sleepless nights, the heavy work load and the missing meals. Jo only had Ash and she barely saw her sister so the family dynamics wouldn’t change too much, but what if Jo decided to go forward with what she has been planning? She can’t keep spending too many nights out. She couldn’t somehow understand Evelyn’s words, even not to the full extent of it, she didn’t have any children.

“You know, beet isn’t as unhealthy as some ‘wealth maniacs’ put it out to be.” Jo spoke, not understanding that it was a joke to begin with, she took the blonde’s words literally. She clearly didn’t understand the last bit. She was physically and intellectually superior than most people, while she considered Evelyn intellectually equal, she was sure the older woman would be no match for her physical prowess or her magical ability. “I’m very fit. Thank you for noticing…” she replied confused about the whole interaction.

Deciding to ignore the awkward conversation that had taken place, Jo watched Evelyn for a while before drinking a bit of her beer. “Do you plan on coming back and try that magnificent wall or do you have other things in mind?”

It seemed that Jo hadn't caught on to Evelyn's joke, taking things a bit too literally. It made the half-Veela far more amused with the little exchange than she had been up to then to begin with, and her smile widened with a hint of innocence to it - might as well make things more relaxed than push further into awkwardness, for as much as it would delight the blonde to do so. "You're quite welcome."

Taking a sip of her beverage as well, Evelyn found that the sweet liquid wasn't nearly hot enough for her liking - only natural, as she was one to ingest it while nearly boiling, given her natural temperature resistance. It was very unlikely that people would sell such a thing to humans. Nevertheless, the chamomile flavor to the tea served to calm the woman. Walking away just a bit from the stand to give room for people to go to it after the pair, she let the conversation resume.

"I wasn't planning on it, no. But I suppose I could do it." She looked at the structure idly, entertaining the possibility - she was used to climbing ropes, not walls, but it would certainly work for a fun challenge. She was fairly certain she didn't need equipment either, and in hindsight was surprised that Jo herself had used it. "Maybe I don't need to come back. I'm dressed for the job at least. Though, I feel it would be in poor taste to leave you here by yourself, unless you want a second go at it."

Jo’s wasn’t too good catching onto certain things, jokes like the one said by Evelyn was one of them, she did not only miss it, she didn’t understand the point of it. She stretched her lips lightly, forming a faint smile as Evelyn spoke. She took at sip of her drink and watched as many people tried their luck up that wall, not that many were brave enough to go up without equipment, that or they were just trying not to call attention towards them, there were however, a few humans who were quite adventurous in trying just a thing without those safety measures.

When Evelyn spoke, Jo looked at her. She wouldn’t be surprised if the woman tried and wall, she was fit and capable of reaching such a place, and her heritage would certainly give her a certain advantage. Jo was about to take another sip of her drink when Evelyn hinted that she could climb it at that very moment, at least when they were both over with their drinks. “I can go many times, one way up and one way down one more time isn’t going to scare me away.” She spoke, before taking a long sip of her drink, the faster she was over with it, the faster she could climb that wall once more.

“How do you want to do it? Rope? No rope? I feel like most people would find it suspicious, but I’m seeing others doing it so we shouldn’t call attention to ourselves.” She was faster than Evelyn, and stronger, she could easily win if it was set as a race, but she didn’t even want to mention it, she was a bad winner, not exactly a bad looser but she did enjoy shoving her victory in other people’s faces. “Maybe after our drinks, unless you feel like climbing with a tea cup.” Jo tried to make a slight joke, that didn’t sound too good.

"Using a rope would be more prudent, wouldn't you say?" Around wizards, it wouldn't surprise them so much if the pair were to simply race to the top, cord free, at a speed superior to what humans could achieve; but, as Aurors, they had to set an example. While she had been more than ready to make fun of Jo before for the usage of equipment, she wasn't so daft as to ignore the upside to doing so.

"In any case." She took a sip of the sweet chamomile tea. For a moment she pondered heating up the cup with her own hand, but eventually relented from the idea as the server a little ways away from them was probably a Muggle; at least, she couldn't pick anything vaguely of note from their thought patterns. "I'm flattered that you enjoy my company so much you'd take on that challenge again."

She couldn't help the jokes at that point, them being as much part of her nature as her passive Legilimency mastery. She wasn't sure if Jo would understand it, but she didn't care so much; if anything, her taking things literally made it for an even greater sense of amusement to the half-Veela, a borderline sadistic one.

Jo agreed with Evelyn, going up without the equipment, along with her natural speed was a recipe for disaster among Muggles, while the community was a lot more open than in other places it wasn’t that open, meaning they would have to be extra careful not to get caught, but it didn’t mean the two of them couldn’t have their fun, even with the equipment they could still make a competition, a competition that Jo intended to win, assuming nothing happened to slow her down.

Why wouldn’t Jo enjoy the company of another co-worker? Especially the sweet scent that seemed to follow the older woman everywhere. It was a sweet and soft scent that was probably a consequence of her veela heritage. Jo simply shrugged at her comment, while Jo didn’t consider Evelyn to be a friend they were in friendly terms, they had mutual respect for each other and they wouldn’t cross each other’s paths if it wasn’t convenient for them, besides, Jo did enjoy the scent more than anything.

The dhampir continued to drink quietly, looking at the wall, watching people go up and down, some didn’t even manage to get halfway before they quit, weaklings. She turned her attention towards Evelyn, who seemed to still be entertained with her tea. “So, how’s that tea?” she asked, not really carrying for the answer, but seemed the only thing she could do to keep the conversation running until they both end their drinks so they can climb the wall.

The pair watched the wall in silence as they sipped their respective beverages. Evelyn couldn't help hold a minimal resentment towards the existence of Muggles in that one moment - the hypocrisy was borne from her constant pursuit of and delight with danger. She wished she could race the Dhampir to the top, regardless of who'd come victorious. She wished she could jump off the top and land safely on her feet, like a Veela with her level of fitness would. Such things were null and void under the curious eyes of people whom had no idea of what supernatural abilities were. Her job appeased that need for reckless endangerment at times, fortunately.

"Hm?" Brought out of her less than pleasant line of thought, it took her a moment before her brain had worked out the question Jo had posed. "Oh, quite sweet. Perhaps a bit too much for my liking, but certainly digestible." Not nearly hot enough, but it would have to do - it was from a random stand after all, and she didn't hold complete control over its brewing. "How about your beer?" She thought that Jo wasn't too proficient with small talk - it could be that it was Evelyn's burden to bear solely for the sake of enjoying her company.

"Why were you climbing on your own, if you don't mind me asking?" Perhaps a bit of an intrusive question, but Evelyn's honeyed words made it sound not as rude. "Don't take it the wrong way, please, it's just to satisfy my curiosity. I just figure this is the sort of activity that one would want to do in pairs, or as a group."

Evelyn replied and Jo simply stretched her lips giving the woman the confirmation that she had acquired the information. When the blonde spoke, asking her about the beer, Jo looked at her bottle and shrugged. “Not bad, not my favourite brand, but I can’t complain.” She took the bottle to her lips again, almost draining the rest of its content. The Dhampir remained quiet after their small exchange of words. There was nothing that dictated that two people couldn’t enjoy their time together and still remained silent, one didn’t need to be a genius to figure it out, but it was uncomfortable for most people, perhaps it was uncomfortable for Evelyn, like it is for most people.

Jo looked over at the blonde, but before she could answer Evelyn continued. She didn’t take it the wrong way, it was a question like any other. “It’s a legitimate question…” she simply replied, taking another sip before deciding to answer the woman. “There’s not much to it, I wanted to come, my sister was busy, when she’s free I’m busy, so I came without her.” Aspen also doubted that Ash would want to climb it, but it wouldn’t be the first time that Ash surprised Jo. “There’s not more to it.”

She leaned a little on the table, finished her beer and put the bottle on the table. “And it’s a good activity to do alone, that’s about it.” she chuckled awkwardly at Evelyn. What more could she say? She wasn’t lying nor she was trying to hide anything, even if it sounded, she way by the way she had chuckled. “So, when you’re done with your tea, I’m ready for this friendly competition.”

"I see." Right, Jo had a sister. For as much of a social butterfly as Evelyn prided herself on being, such details slipped her mind all too often. It reminded the half-Veela that Jo had been adopted into a human family. Even if she wasn't particularly close to any of them, it was reassuring to know people who cared about halfbreeds such as them still existed. It was what Evelyn was fighting for after all.

"In any case, if you ever need a companion for this sort of activity and you find yourself out of luck, I can make myself available if you so wish." Her sense of humor didn't fly too well with the younger woman but the blonde figured it was too great an opportunity to pass up on when it came to making allies. Even if Jo had never struck her as someone to be used in the political house of cards that was the Ministry, she'd be better off safe than sorry in the long run.

Finishing her drink, the woman moved to toss the cup into the nearby trash bin. "Thank you for indulging me, Officer." She joked again despite not expecting much of a comeback at all, a playful grin filling her lips. "You've had a go just now, so you can show me how it's done. Please, lead the way."

The question was still lingering in Jo’s head and why it would be seen as an intrusion, but soon the thought faded once the blond spoke, proposing that she could accompany Jo if she ever needed a companion for some physical activity. Who was Jo to decline such offer? While she didn’t mind her alone time, Evelyn was her co-worker and people were supposed to keep a decent relationship with people they work with, this was a perfect opportunity to do so. “Thanks, I’ll be sure to remember that.” She doubted Evelyn was in roller derby, but there would be other opportunities.

The joke flew over Jo’s head, as she didn’t understand what Evelyn mean. She went over it one more time. “No need to thank me…” Jo finally spoke, stretching her legs and arms. There wouldn’t be a need for Jo to show Evelyn how things were done there were a lot of volunteers willing to help them get onto the right equipment, but maybe it would be a good thing, she had to think that getting along with co-workers was good. “Sure…I’ll show you.”

Jo walked towards the wall once more, where a couple of volunteers gave them the equipment. Jo put hers on first and tried to show Evelyn how she did it. Assuming the woman could follow simple instructions, there shouldn’t be an issue with the whole activity. “Now we climb…coming down is a lot easier just…” Jo looked at the others and pointed at a lady that was descending, sliding on the line. “…like that.”

The Dhampir waited for Evelyn to get ready so that she could start to climb the wall. Should she rush within reason to win, or should she match Evelyn’s pace. Would it be so rude to win and gloat to the blonde’s face? If her parents were there they would probably scold her to think like that.

Evelyn followed Jo towards the colossally tall climbing wall, eyes flickering towards her daughter over at the adult jungle gym a few times as she went. The blonde seemed to be having fun, especially with her cousin playing pranks on her - it brought a rare, genuine kind of smile to the half-Veela's lips. If her daughter was happy, she was happy, and it quite astonishing to her how simple that concept was along with its execution.

"Thank you." She spoke to the volunteer handing her the appropriate gear with her trademark dashing smile covering her lips. Her gaze fell on Jo as she put on the equipment, following suit without much difficulty and strapping the various rope to the harness. As Jo pointed upwards, Evelyn watched a stranger making their ascent; it seemed easy enough, if slightly boring to do with equipment.

"Understood." With that, they were off. Upwards and onwards, or so they say, the pair proceeded on with their little extracurricular activity, with the blonde paying special attention to where she put her hands and so not to accidentally tear out a rock with her own supernatural force like Jo had done earlier.

Once they were both ready to climb, Jo made sure her equipment was in place once more, before looking up and then at the half-veela. As soon as the blonde started moving, Jo started to climb the wall as well. The young Dhampir moved as fast as she could, enough not to draw attention to herself. Jo already knew the exact strength she needed to use, but that didn’t stop her from pulling another piece of a rock and having to casually put it in its place. She hopped no one saw that as the rock was out in place using her magic.

Both women were fast and strong, and they were both trying no to call attention towards themselves, but it didn’t take long to reach the top. Jo had always been a sore loser, she disliked losing and while she didn’t take it personally, she saw it as a shameful event that shouldn’t even happen. Reaching the top Jo quickly found a place to sit on the ledge, not many people did it, only those who either had a death wish or were used to it.

“Hmmm, I didn’t even take a minute to take a look at the view earlier…” she was in such a hurry to go down that she hadn’t even paid attention to the view.

Given their self imposed limitations pertaining the speed of their ascent, the pair climbed at roughly the same pacing - Evelyn was using Jo's speed to gauge her own, and ultimately they reached the top of the structure in sync. The ropes and the harness made it quite uncomfortable for the half-Veela to join her work colleague sitting atop the wall but she made it work, legs dangling off the edge as she watched the sunset with perfect balance.

"We're too used to living in a hurry in general, I'd say." She replied, agreeing with the woman - it was truly a remarkable view. It was rare when Evelyn actually took a moment to stop and appreciate the beauty of the world with all the time her work, family and general scheming took up. It served as a reminder that every now and then a little break from pressing matters didn't hurt anyone.

"Our lives go by so quickly with our type of job we don't even take the time to stop and appreciate what's right in front of our noses. It's truly a shame." It was something Evelyn had to work on, but she couldn't help struggle with the notion that, with her type of life, it might not be worth it.

Evelyn was right, the view was spectacular, and it was such a beautiful thing to miss if one was always in such a hurry. Jo could only speak for herself, but she was always in a hurry to do something or to get somewhere, they hardly had time to stop, breathe and enjoy life, it had always been like that, even when she was a student, always rushing around. Her legs dangled on the edge as her elbows rest on her legs as she enjoyed the view. “It’s a shame…we never get to enjoy life. Could be worse I suppose.” Jo didn’t inquire herself much about it, she preferred to just continue to do what she did best, not paying too much attention to things she could be missing, or not.

“The job isn’t easy I admit, but it isn’t for everyone either.” She joked, but she knew she was right. Being an Auror wasn’t for everyone, either physically or mentally; it took a lot out of a person and always following the rules becomes tiring at some point, things weren’t as black and white and Jo saw them, that job taught her about a grey area where no one gets hurts.

That day Jo could quietly remain at the top of the wall, relaxing with some friendly company, before going back down, before going back to her normal daily routine. She started to go down with the aid of the equipment, after a while well spent it was best if she just went home and rub a little of her, not so dangerous, adventure on her sister's face.
