Tory tugged her leather jacket more snugly around her shoulders as the bitter summer wind tried to enter, blinking at the bright lights of the Melbourne street. Tonight had been a long time coming and so despite Altor's pleading looks as she left her home, despite her own tiredness, she had forced herself to head to the muggle bar to meet Elena for their long-awaited drinks. What had started out as a casual invitation for drinks that night had snowballed away as the Head of Magical Law Enforcement had called all the aurors to an emergency meeting to brief them on the return of Thomas Sollozzo to the country.

As it tended to do for aurors, work had gotten busy and the next thing Tory knew it had been almost a month since the invitation had been issued and neither she nor Elena had been able to follow through. After the briefing a number of aurors had been told they would be assigned to Tallygarunga and Narrie to ensure the safety of the community there. She had seen the looks on many of their faces - they considered it a dull, dead-end job. When her own name came up, Tory could not fight her smile. She knew she should be frustrated at being sent away from the 'big' cases but as a new auror her 'big' cases seemed to be B&Es of criminals so dumb they were waiting at the scene for her, or hundreds of hours of filing and paperwork. The return to the first town she had ever felt at home in did not seem to be a bad one.

Besides, she considered optimistically as she tugged open the door to The Blanched Almond, she might get to see Alan once in a while if she was near the school. Old smoke and B.O were the first things to assault her nose as she entered the pub and Tory could not help but wince. Beneath the scent, however, was a more pleasing aroma of wedges and beer. Stomach growling, Tory realised she had not eaten since her brief 'lunch' break at 10am. Following her nose to the bar she smiled easily at the barkeeper, falling into 'friendly good-auror' mode more easily than she realised as she gave him a friendly nod.

"Food still on?"

"Yep, what can I get you?"

"Biggest bowl of wedges you have and a pint of Cooper's Dark." Not questioning the pairing, the barkeeper hurried to put her order into the kitchen and pour her drink as Tory idly ate some of the bar nuts, pretending not to suspect the germs on them as her rumbling stomach thanked her. The dark ale presented to her was bitter on her first swig, and sent a pleasant rush to her brain telling her to just relax and let it do its work. Though she would deny it strenuously, Tory had at first hated beer with a passion, unable to believe anyone would drink it for pleasure. It was only at Manson, her brother's, light ribbing about how disgusted their father would be to know she was drinking the peasant drink which had convinced her to keep sipping the beverage. A year down the track and she found herself longing for a nice cold long-neck to finish her work day. Raising the pint in a half-mocking cheers to her absent brother, Tory skolled half of it in one go and closed her eyes as the pleasant tingling rush of alcohol chased away the day's tiredness.

"Wedges?"

"Cheers." Tory grinned and grabbed her basked of wedges, eyeing the lathering of sour cream appreciatively as she negotiated her way through the crowd to a booth which had just been abandoned by a group of millennials going out to shake it on the dance floor. Dropping into it gratefully, she popped the wedges in front of her and began to munch until she saw a familiar face in the ground. Raising a hand she waved to Elena.

"It had to happen eventually," she greeted, cheerfully, quite pleased to see her partner. "Help yourself to wedges, I'll be ordering more." Her stomach growled in excitement at the prospect as Tory swigged her ale again.

Letting out a small sigh she looked at the reports on her desk and sighed. It had been a rather long day, and with the news of a vicious criminal out and about people had been a bit on edge as of late too. Taking a moment to look at the wanted posted she sighed. It was an interesting thing the way people freaked out and called in sightings that were honestly rather interesting. There was no way this man, no matter how terrible was in 8 places at once. Though one never knew? He seemed like the sort of man who could pull that off. Elena however didn’t want to think about the man while she had the night off to enjoy a little bit of down time.

Letting out a small sigh she stood up and she headed out the door. If she waited any longer she wouldn’t be able to get away from everything. That was how it went. There were many a case she caught because she was here when she was not supposed to be. It was something that made her a little uneasy sometimes, she let out a small laugh at her own expense and headed out. She was to meet Tori as promised once she finished up her report. It had taken her much too long already. She was sure that someone would end up coming to find her if she didn’t show up soon.

The bar was easy to find, that was something she appreciated but then not much was hard to find. She smiled as she walked through the door. The last time she had been in a bar she had discovered that she may not be who or what she thought… Lilith had been and interesting thing… she had learned something about herself maybe? She wasn’t sure but she did know the pink haired kitty managed to stroke her fancy. She had not quite told anyone about it.

She waved as she came and slid into the seat. ”Oh yes good.” She said as she looked at the food in front of her. ’thank god that report was so long, everyone thinks they see this man.” She said as she looked at Tori and shook her head. They had not really checked in. ”How have you been with everything we haven’t had much of a chance to really talk about anything.” She shook her head. ”The beer is cold that means good things.” She said for a moment.

Tory grinned as Elena swiped at the food. There was something about being an auror which just made you ravenously hungry all the time. If she was on patrol she attributed it to moving around all the time and the constant need to be alert, but if she was in the office dealing with paperwork it was definitely because of boredom.

"Too many false tips coming in?" she asked, sympathetically, glad she didn't have to deal with the deluge but only the trickles of information which were handed down to her to follow up on. "I know we followed up the one about him being sighted in The Drunken Roo, but I suspect the person who reported it was just playing a prank on a mate. The guy in question had a very passing resemblance to Sollozzo, but actually nearly passed out when we appeared. Turns out he had an outstanding warrant for peeping in on old Mrs Viandrews. Was not pleased to see us." Tory shook her head and sipped the remains of her beer more sedately.

"You want one?" she asked Elena, motioning the drink. "The crowd's a bit thinner now." Still the mass of swarming people between them and the bar was going to be annoying to negotiate a second time. It might be worth it for a second pint though.
Elena's question made Tory grin faintly. She felt as though the other woman did not like to admit that she cared for Tory's wellbeing, but she often showed it through little things like that.

"Been fine. It's actually really nice being stationed in Narrie. I know, I know," she added, in case Elena was going to point out that it was hardly the place to get a good grounding of field work, "it's meant to be grunt work and no one was meant to like it, but I do. It's home, after all." Or at least it had been more of a home than her own ever had been.

"What do you reckon our chances are of this guy actually showing up?" Just because she was happy stationed near Tally, didn't mean Tory would turn down the chance for some real auror-work. "How are you dealing with the amount of work he's bringing in?" Trying for a casual tone as she sipped her beer, Tory added, "Letting some of the other aurors take some on?" Elena was not the only one who had a certain fondness in their relationship.

She sighed and made a face that seemed to explain that she was swamped with work.  ”They are all terrible tips.  People get all hysterical about this kind of thing.  I mean the guy wants to incite a panic and that is what he is doing.”  She had not been too pleased with the false tips either.  ”Oh har har what a funny joke, I would slaughter my mate if they did that to me.”  She said with a harsh laugh that was more out of incredulous amazement at people and the ‘pranks’ they thought were funny these days.  She missed the days of simple pranks like farting quills.  That was pretty funny.  She still thought it was pretty funny… she would have to remember that for later.

Elena was a tough cookie, she always had been.  However that wouldn’t make her lose sigh of the important things.  Like the fact Tory was still her partner and she still worried.  Being a rookie was tough work, and they had been separated which was kind of strange honestly.  Elena didn’t like it.  She still felt that responsibility for her and keeping her safe and this was not the way to do that.  She trusted Tory was well equipped but Sollozzo would give them all a bit of a work over.  She sighed  She hated the fear that the man could breed.  People shouldn’t feel afraid.  She didn’t know much on the man, as much as anyone could know a fugitive.

”If you are so happy maybe they will transfer you permanently… how fun right?  They could assign you to the school and it would be just like the old days.”  She teased.  Letting out a small laugh. ”Yeah that would be perfect.”  She said in response.  She smiled at her.  ”At least you are finding the silver lining about it.  If there ever can be one when we have to deal with people like this.”  She said shaking her head.  The man was horrific.

”Me, oh I’m fine.”  She said unsure of if they were at the point of sharing things in their relationship.  She let out a small laugh and shrugged.  ”I mean.  You know how it is, I am a control freak they mess everything up…. Like everything.”  She said shaking her had and half shrugging.  She was not always someone who gave u p control that easy.  ”I have managed to let Greenway do some of the reports he may be a trained monkey but he can write.”  that was always something… Sort of.

She leaned back as she had another wedge.  ”I think so.  The thing about guys like Sollozzo is they have the need to see things through and he has an agenda and unfinished business.”  She shrugged.  It was based on the profile.  ”I just know I want him to show his face and give up the end game so we can all get back to life as normal.”

"It's common for people to go nuts like this?" Tory confirmed, jerking an eyebrow in surprise. She herself had never been prone to hysteria so the entire concept seemed somewhat foreign. "Surely people don't just call up aurors' to say they've seen someone with a bald patch wandering the roads?" She supposed, given her own experience, that it wasn't entirely impossible, but it still seemed ridiculous to Tory. After all, the MLE was there to help in case of emergency  - you didn't just call them because something went bump in the night.

Elena's comment about slaughtering her mates for a bad prank made Tory wince ever so slightly - and reminded her about why she did not want to get on her partner's bad side. As an ex-Sturt, pranks that others might consider in poor-taste went hand-in-hand with her day to day life. She reminded herself not to risk trying such amusements on Elena.

Tory pulled a face at the thought of a permanent transfer.

"Saudi Arabia may have quashed my adventurous soul temporarily but the idea of being a full-time country-auror..." she gave an exaggerated shudder, thinking of the slightly-pudgy, slow-witted aurors she had met who had been 'permanently reassigned' to various low-crime areas in Victoria, "I think not, somehow."

Taking Elena up on her confirmation, Tory rose to her feet and made her way to the bar. As sore as her own legs were from her full day's work, she knew her partner would have doubled her workload, though she had yet to hear Elena complain about it. Grabbing another pair of beers she wrestled herself through the crowd again with a few well-placed elbows and glares, and returned to the table, dropping the refreshments before each of them. Grabbing a rapidly-cooling wedge and silently wishing she dared risk a heating charm, Tory scoffed it and raised an eyebrow at Elena's half-answer to her question.

"Greenway is a moron," she supplied helpfully. Part of her wished she was back at the ministry to help with Elena's workload. At least she knew she could trust herself not to stuff it up. Dipping a wedge a little too vigorously into the sour-cream she stirred and frowned.  "Seriously though, you aren't helping anyone if you burn out," Tory said, rather shortly, her cheeks colouring as she shoved the sour-cream soaked wedge into her mouth and glared at the crowds of people dancing nearby as though it was their fault that she cared about Elena's wellbeing.

"It would be nice," she agreed to the assessment of Sollozzo. "Unfortunately these guys like to play for the end game. Like to take their time - enjoy seeing the people around them panic." Thinking of Alan at the school - the highest place of risk - Tory frowned again, shoving a wedge into the cream so violently it burst open, its white insides dropping into the dish.

"Anyway," Tory forced herself to brighten, "the point of tonight was to have a semblance of a break from work. What are your plans for the weekend?" Only when she asked did the young woman remember that it was rare for herself to have plans beyond, 'work' or 'run Altor'.

She nodded.  ”there is a reason we don’t tell the public everything, many things incite panic… and create more work for us in the long run.  However there are some people you have to alert them too.  Look at the bit of mess London got into with that noseless fellow.”  She said with a sigh.  There was a huge mess that had come out of that, and in this case, they had to warn the public.  ”People insert themselves into investigations all the time.  You would be surprised.”  She said shaking her head.  ”They want to know what happening, they want to be famous as the tip that broke the case, and for some it’s about making sure they have control over what we find out.  Sometimes the tip line can help… but other times… it’s a burden.”

Elena did not disagree with how this was being handled.  It had to be handled this way, it was a very dangerous man they dealt with… they needed to be sure they could do the right things.  She sighed as she looked at Tory.  ”It won’t always be so bad.”  She said.  ”In this case it was deemed safer to notify the public than have something happen to them.  She said as she looked at her.  Letting out a small laugh she chuckled.  ”No not getting along with the locals?”  She could only imagine how they felt with them coming in from  the city to fix a dangerous problem.

”He is a complete moron.”  Letting out a small laugh she shook her head.  ”I’m fine. I think you just miss me and have this thing in your head no one else can make my life easier like you can.”  She teased.  Though it was the truth.  They had found a pretty good rhythm.  It was hard to find someone who you actually liked and worked well with.  I was a constant struggle but you did what you could.  You had to.

”I was planning in catching up on the sleep that I have not been able to get all week thanks to it.”  she said with a smile.  ”what about you?  Big date with Altor?”  she didn’t think it was a bad thing to have those kind of plans.  She actually wished she had those kinds of plans but she didn’t know if a dog would be a good idea with the cat she now had in her life.

"Better than creating a panic because of people seeing him and thinking we didn't know, I guess," Tory sighed in agreeance. "I still think they should set up a proper hotline for things like this - get all the auror-wannabees on it, answering calls and sending it through once they've sorted out the muck from the real. At least you might get to take a lunch-break once in a while," she grinned crookedly at her mentor.

"Got no issues with the locals - that's the problem," Tory grinned more readily this time. "Narrie is a great, laid-back place. No adventure to speak of. Sometimes that's nice. But as a career choice? Probably not up my alley. The quiet life isn't exactly why I spent the last year elbow-deep in case-law." Recalling the number of nights she had literally fallen asleep with her nose in a book, Tory made a face. "Although I suppose that should have been the first hint that aspects of this weren't going to be exciting."

"You can't deny I make your life easier," she returned Elena's teasing easily. "It's easy to be the best when you've been trained by the best." It still felt strange to be sent out on patrols with the other auror recruits who had been sent to Narrie - city-folk who had never set foot on dirt on their life and other 'greenies' like her - the juniors who had no say in what assignments they were handed. Sometimes Tory would turn left expecting them to know where she was going like Elena would, only to look back and find nothing but a cloud of dust behind her.

"Sleep? Sleep is for the weak!" Tory toasted the remains of her glass and downed it, appreciating the sudden rush to her head it presented. "Yeah, Al's pretty mad at me at the moment." Tory frowned slightly, considering that a date with her dog was the closest she was likely to get these days. There had been the boy in Saudia....but unfortunately it was impossible to juggle a relationship and a trainee-auror workload.  Not that Tory was one of those 'desperate to get into a relatinship' girls. But sometimes it was lonely coming home to just Altor...

Trying to shake away the thoughts and realising she'd been quiet for far longer than the question had warranted, Tory forced a smile,

"I'm working Sunday but tomorrow I promised Altor we'd head out into the bushland for a proper hike. I haven't gotten him out for a run in three days. He keeps giving me these threatening looks like 'you're so lucky I haven't destroyed the damn chair yet.'"

”We are the proper hotline.”  She said with a sardonic smile.  It was the truth, in terms of proper this was how it went around here, they worked the tips and they kept everyone safe.  ”Though if this keeps on and we don’t find him soon they are going to have to utilize the hopefuls… otherwise you and I are going to end up piles of dust.”  Burning the candle at both ends was a pretty good metaphor for what Elena had been doing for a while now.  Of course, she had also not had an actual personal life before now, and by complete accident she had found one.  One she was still not ready to talk about, mainly because she was worried about jinxing it.  It was a little scary to think she was jumping into something.  Actually, it was terrifying.

She just tried to ignore it.  That was all she could do, because equally as terrifying was the idea that she would miss out on something truly great.  ”Not everything is supposed to be fun all the time.  This is like closet duty on steroids sometimes…I mean we all have to ear our stripes… and this is just part of the deal.”  She said with a shrug.  Everyone had to pay dues.  That didn’t mean she actually liked the way this was going.  She wanted this man to be caught, she didn’t want to worry about what he was doing and to who.  Letting out a slight sigh she gave a smile. ”You do make my life easier.  I wont deny it.”  Elena wouldn’t lie to make her feel better either.

Elena smiled and shook her head.  ”That is how people get hexed.”  she knew that she was joking, and that Elena was not really training her, but she still felt that responsibility for her partner, which made the separation far more maddening.  She trusted herself to keep Tory safe.  That was about it.  Tory was her partner and she knew that she could handle herself, but she didn’t know if her assigned partner right now was going to have her back the way Elena would.  However, she wa not going to mother Tory… she did have other ways to check in to make sure she was fine though.  She had no trouble using them.  No one knew you like your partner, and you trusted no one like you did your partner.  That was not a bond you took lightly.

”Poor baby, he’s probably so lonely.”  She said with a frown.  ”I know a dog walker… which I get is strange since I don’t have one… but they may be able to get him out during the week?  And that poor chair of yours can live to see another day?”  It was a very nice chair honestly.  She smiled.  ”That poor dog.”

"I'm not afraid of the hard work," Tory said hastily, hoping to remedy any negative impressions Elena might have of her. "I just feel like there should be a better way to streamline it, you know? Like sorting the Special Forces Closet." Swirling her beer Tory shook her head faintly.

The mention of Altor being lonely stung Tory, though she didn't want to inspect too closely whether it was too reflective of her own feelings or simply the thought that she couldn't care for her own dog. The idea of anyone else touching her fiercely-loyal kelpie - or the fact that she wasn't 'doing enough' - bothered her more than she wanted to admit.

"I think he gets enough...I take him out every day..." she frowned again, glowering at her warm remaining beer as though somehow it was the alcohol's fault. "I dunno, I don't trust many people with him." Pretty much her and the Burdett's. And if Elena had any wish to offer to dog-sit Tory figured her partner was as trustworthy as she herself. As her thoughts wandered to these people, the idea hit her so hard she could have fallen out of her chair. Grinning widely she slapped the table. "Alan! Of course, I'll see if Mr and Mrs Burdett would like to take Altor some days. I know they love him. They never mind me bringing him along to their dinners. Even without the farm, he's happy to trot along with anyone as long as they give him a pat occasionally." Specifically on days when she could tell she was going to be stuck in the Ministry until all hours. It was a great idea and she was rather annoyed that she hadn't thought of it earlier.

Leaning back and feeling far more relaxed, she asked her partner,

"Well you've helped me solve one of my stress'. What else do you have on your mind? Beside our mysterious Mr Sollozzo? We can brainstorm. I can help." Feeling a stress she hadn't even known was resting on her lift, Tory settled in to enjoying her night more fully.

Elena nodded.  She didn’t have negative impressions of Tory, or rather, the idea that she needed a partner had not gone over well, but now that she had one, she missed her.  Elena had always been more solitary these days, she didn’t trust too many people after ex had run off with the best man.  She had not tried to make tory feel bad, it was a simple fact of life.  Elena had plants that were suffering in her home... she needed to giver it up… she was not good at keeping anything extra alive.  She did well keeping herself and her partner alive.  She even did well protecting the general population.  She just sucked keeping anything green alive… It was a horrible thing to admit to- especially when her mother pestered her about grandchildren.

That was not happening.

At least not until Elena was in a good headspace for them.  Then it could be an entirely different matter- like how was she figure out how to have kids with her current romantic interest… and it was entirely too early to think about kid.  ”That does sound like a great idea honestly… I don’t know how people with human children do it… they are more demanding.”  She said with a small shrug of her shoulders.  However… they always would be the sorts of people who did what had to be done in order to make things work, to keep people safe.  Maybe that was her contribution to the next generation, instead of actual children.

”What else?”  Elena wondered if Tory could read minds, or if she knew her well enough to know that something was a bit off.  She thought for a moment but she didn’t think her partner would judge her for it… Not really.  She shrugged.  ”I sort of met someone.”  She had met someone- there was no sort of to it.  She gave a soft humm.  ”Except I haven’t dated anyone since my divorce… and it’s completely different.”  She looked at Tory.  ”Like the exact opposite of my ex husband in every way and it’s a bit intimidating… and exciting… and scary…”  She wrinkled her nose.

In the past the mention of children would have made Tory pull a face. Whether she was honestly disgusted or just truly frightened to care for them she had never bothered to examine, but time spent with Alan's kids (or her siblings as she often thought of them privately) had made her realise that kids weren't that scary or - more importantly - breakable. A few deep breathing exercises she had learned to help her cope with memories of Lauren's death stifled her momentary fears that children were that breakable.

"I'm certainly not looking to procreate any time soon," she assured her partner with an exaggerated shudder. "Unless you know a good child-walker too." Grinning, she went to sip her drink only to find it dry. Pulling a face, Tory glanced towards the bar but the thought of getting up and fighting through the crowd again was unappealing. Pushing the glass to the side she poured herself and Elena glasses of water, more for something to do with her hands than anything.

Elena's revelation surprised her. Not because she did not think her partner was capable of finding someone to date - Tory got on with her well enough after all - but both that she had found time to date and that she had coughed up that quite personal information to Tory. Carefully to keep all surprise from her face, Tory sipped at her water and said conversationally,

"Oh? Where did you meet him? And the exact opposite is good - after all you divorced him for a reason," she lightened the comment with a smile. "How long have you been seeing him?" Recognising that Elena was offering a bit of trust in opening up so much, Tory thought she ought to give something in return. "I haven't had a chance to see anyone since starting at the academy - no time. There was this one guy in Saudi Arabia though..." her lips twitched in remembrance. "But it's not really here nor there since he's not likely to come to Australia and I doubt I'll have the time to go visit. Long distance really is for chumps."

Elena laughed.  ”oh no, I cant say I know anyone who walks children… at least not willingly.”  she said with a small laugh.  It was not that kids were a bad thing, for those who wanted them she imagined they were great… but ultimately… she was not about to jump into the idea of having kids… she also didn’t think she had the proper skills to be a mother.  Something she likely wouldn’t change very soon.  She smiled.  ”However I am glad to know that Altor will remain an only child for a little bit longer.”  She had to admit that it was actually kind of comforting.  Tory was about the only real socialization she was able to have these days.  Letting out a small smile she shook her head.  ”I don’t have plans myself… kids seem to be very complicated.”

She could tell this was a bit of a surprise topic, but Elena had it on her mind and she needed to talk about it to someone.  The fact was, she had no idea what she was experiencing or if it would last.  All she knew was that she was getting herself into something she was a little out of her depth for.  She bit her lip and wondered if telling Tory that she was interested in a woman, not women but this one woman… Elena had always been aware that sexuality was fluid, she had walked in on an example of it and it had ended her marriage.  She took a sip of her beer and then looked at Tory.

”Well, its not actually a he.”  she said almost wincing at the revelation.  Not because she was ashamed of it, but because it was such a drastic change from her entire love life.  ”I met her at  bar actually- she turned into a cat and it sort of developed after that.”  She shrugged.  ”I haven’t really been able to see her with the current safety concerns for everyone… I just, I don’t know it kind of took me by surprise.”  She said honestly.  ”and its always hard to date one of us, we are always busy.”

"There's an interesting thought. Altor might act up if I did bring someone else into the picture. I had considered another dog to give him some company but given the size of the yard - having one kelpie there is hard enough. Having two," Tory gave an exaggerated shudder. "Besides, he might be the jealous type." She doubted it - he absolutely loved Alan's dogs. He had pined quite madly when Max had passed away, running around looking for the older pup for hours - but dogs were funny creatures and he just might get upset about sharing his young mistress.

A laugh escaped Tory's lips without her realising it was coming at Elena's revelation,

"Oh sorry," she stifled it and waved a hand in the air apologetically. "I just didn't realise how opposite you meant. And I do recall you mentioned your husband was something of a dog at one point," she added innocently, stifling another grin. "Okay, I have to get the full story here. How on earth...I mean let's just start with this - she's an auror, yes?" That much Tory could surmise from the conversation. "And an animagus. She turned into a cat and that...somehow ended with you dating?" She laughed again, positively tickled. "You can't just say that and give me nothing more, please." Then, in case she needed to further assure the other woman that her preference's could not matter less to Tory, the younger auror added off-handedly,

"I don't have a huge amount of experience in either department, but there was one night when I was in Europe. She rode a moped. It was quite ridiculous actually." Grinning fondly at the memory, including having mocked Leah for her 'fake motorbike', Tory wondered what the other woman was up to these days. If she wanted to upset her father further than she already had, she could certainly track her down.

She nodded.  ”I have  see it happen before.  When Jazz had her baby their little terrier had a horrible fit every time you paid little Jack any attention…. Of course, now that Jack is 6, the pair are best friends.”  She shrugged as she drank the rest of her beer.  She figured that was how it always went.  You resisted change, and then when you started to understand and like the change, you were surprised when they were suddenly your best friend. One just had to look at the two women in the booth.  Not that Elena had been an older sister unwilling to share her parents attentions but she had not bee thrilled about having a new partner.  Now she was not happy that they had split them up.

”Very opposite…”  She agreed with Tory.  ”He was, only I didn’t know just how much of one.”  She frowned and wondered if maybe she had been too harsh on him… but then he had stepped out on their marriage.  She shifted in her seat.  ”No actually, she is a mechanic and attending VMU”  So she was also young.  It was a very strange thing… she let out a small sigh as she looked at the table for a moment.  Her parents hated the fact she was an aurora and then hated the fact she  had gotten divorced.  ”I went to the bar after work and she talked to me, well she actually got me to talk to her, you know I am usually monosyllabic when talking to people.”  She was not the greatest socially.

Working was a different story, she smiled.  ”then in the midst of it all she tuned into a cat, and knocked things over and so we had to leave before I got myself banned from another establishment.”  Elena had followed a suspect into a bar and broken quite a few bottles and she had not been allowed back into that bar.  She shook her head for a moment.  ”Its just- new… you know?”

"A mechanic?" Tory's eyebrows shot up. Elena's follow-up made her grin, "What are you talking about? The first day I met you I distinctly recall you stringing together, 'Fine, follow me.'" Snorting slightly at the memory, which she had viewed with trepidation and annoyance at the time, Tory now saw it affectionately. Elena might not be the easiest to get to know, to but Tory could see past that now to appreciate the intelligent, loyal woman she had in her partner. "You've been fitting in bar visits without me? I'm hurt." Tory found herself tapping her fingers against her empty beer bottle edgily, but could not for the life of her explain why. Glancing around again she grimaced at the crowd and glowered at her empty bottle.

"Bugger this. Back in a sec." Tossing her empty bottle away from her with some unnecessary force, Tory slid her way throughout the crowd, subtly dropping an electric shock spell on the rear end of anyone who decided to remain in her way until she reached the bar. "Six Young's Double Stouts," she ordered in a voice she suspected she had learned from her father - it brooked no argument and would permit no one to ignore her. "And a serve of nachos." The bartender looked at her dubiously for a moment but as she threw her cash onto the bar he served the drinks and a moment later the (clearly re-heated) nachos. Grabbing the bottles awkwardly around the nacho bowl, Tory wandlessly and silently added a sticking charm to ensure she would lose none of the precious beverages and stalked back through the crowd. Substituting her elbows for stinging hexes this time, she made it back to the table and dumped her load in front of Elena victoriously.

"No sense in constantly beating our way through that, or in having an empty bottle," she declared, dropping back into her seat and twisting the top off her bottle. Taking an appreciative swig, she nodded at Elena's final comments. "Wait...banned from another establishment? What have you been doing in your down time? Have you seen much of her since?" A faint note of envy entered Tory's voice before she could stop it. She didn't consider herself someone who needed a relationship - in fact the idea of having to be somewhere with someone all the time quite annoyed her - but there was something to be said to having people you loved around you.

She made a mental note to visit Alan as soon as she could.

Elena nodded.  She was a mechanic.  Elena had never had a need for one but she was fascinated by the profession all the same honestly.  Letting out a small laugh.  She realized what she had been saying and how strange it had to sound coming from her.  ”They took my major responsibility and sent it to Narrie, I have had a lot of free time without you around.”  she said in reply.  The truth was she did have a lot free time.  Not because Tory was someone who made her work harder out of the younger woman’s ignorance, but because she didn’t find herself as hungry for the long hours when she was alone.  Tory pushed her to work harder, to be better.  That was what you wanted in a partnership… it was so you were both better at the job you had.  It was not that without her she was Lazy, but the desire to put in the extra hours when she knew the next long day lie ahead… it was daunting.

”Three words… well you should consider yourself lucky.”  she said with a smile. In spite of her reluctance to partner once again she was able to enjoy having one who was just as eager to save the world as she was.  ”Hurry, yeah, I’ve nearly drained mine.”  she said with a laugh aster the brunette as she made her way to the bar to get them reinforcements.  She smiled as she saw her return.  ”you have become quite crafty in your charms’  she said with a smile.  It was a good thing that Tory seemed to be coming into her own as an auror.  Elena was worried about the day Tory no longer needed her but Tory was a formidable woman… that was not something you could keep down.  Elena knew from her personal experience.  She never stayed down for long.

”Thank you.”  She smiled taking the new, colder bottle and twisting off the cap.  ”Well, believe it or not Tory back in the days at the academy I was quite a force to be reckoned with… I managed to get myself and a some of my classmates banned from a few establishments… “  Elena had been a hell raiser.  ”I am not nearly drunk enough to share these embarrassing stories…” She said with a wink as she took another sip and reached for nacho.  ”Not really honestly, she’s been pretty busy with school, and then I’ve been busy… I hope soon…”  She said the honesty that had come to the table tonight was not one she had anticipated, however she was glad that she had managed to find the trust in her partner.  It was not about Tory, but more about Elena and her dislike of change.
