THE AUSTRALIAN HOME OF MAGIC

When the phone went off with a Taungurong elder's crooning dialect growling, "Get your bathers on and get in the damn catchment.", Nox just knowingly rolled out of bed, zipped on a full knee racing suit and prepped their main gear: a waterproof housed smartphone and magical SLR camera, a handle tray to hold both devices, and spare film and lenses, which were all zipped up into magically extended swimsuit pockets—even though one of those "pockets" was just between the front zipper and extra layer of fabric stretching over the useful (yet excessive) cleavage the metamorph woke up with.

After strapping on a shoulder harness for their wand and machete and after grabbing their ranger clothes, Nox soon found themselves submerged near the mouth of a torrid river emptying into the Narrie Lakes. It only took a moment of shapeshifting some gills and fins to feel the problem:

Low oxygen.

Something they should have expected with all their ranger managers complaining about algae and fish die-offs exarcerbated by poor water management and drought. But with a cut in funding and with how much potential magic could be in the area, there weren't any  resources to spare for an environmental survey—unless all the resources you needed were two cameras, some second-nature shapeshifting, and a bit of magic.

And so Nox found themselves swimming around most of the day and taking videos with their phone and pictures with their camera while making plenty of adjustments with magical infrared and color filters to get the right shot in all the murky waters. The day was pretty uneventful, until they began to focus on hunting down carp breeding grounds, where their shots started to get photobombed by a hungry, hardhead duck, snatching up fish eggs and baby carp.

Nox could only assume the duck thought their fish-eye lens camera made them look like a giant duck blowing a bubble, or the waterfowl caught on to junior ranger making frequent stops where food was, (or both). Either way, the bird was messing up their shots and needed to find something else to do.

So Nox swam to the shallow lake edge and stood up… only to find they stood up where the duck had swam, which was right on top of their head. And now there was a duck contently sitting in their updo. Perfect.

The gilled swimmer's gaze was then drawn towards two people standing on the bank, doing who knows what, but maybe they could lend a hand.

"'Ey!" Nox called out, with one hand holding the tray of cameras they had the other jab a finger towards their (live) feathery headpiece, "Either you two need a duck?"

"Are you kidding me, Sammiwammyjammy? This is why you visited?" The Spencer girl was flabbergasted, feigned indignation clear on her face. "We could've gone for food! To the arcade! Swimming! You want to fish instead? Are you insane?!" The wrestler was actually pretty happy over Samantha visiting, all things considered. Though, fishing sounded really, really boring. She knew Sam liked fishing, but that wasn't Amber's cup of tea at all. Sitting and waiting for something to bite wasn't her style and she couldn't begin to comprehend how anyone actually liked that egregious activity.

"Sammiwamm--" The half-Veela squinted in confusion at how bad her nicknames had gotten. "--Okay, yeah, I guess we could have. But this is fun, you know. You just have to give it a chance. 'Fun' doesn't have to go hand in hand with the potential of getting hurt."

"It's directly proportional."

"I don't think so." She couldn't help but chuckle at her foster cousin. "Besides, this will give us food too, you know. How about this: if we catch something today, we'll go camping and we'll roast it then. Deal? You like camp--"

"Deal!" Amber enthusiastically agreed, practically forgetting about her early grievances. It earned a harder laugh from her younger cousin. "What? And where's your stuff anyway? You don't plan to catch fish with your bag, do you?"

"Actually? Yes. Yes I do." The Bourke spoke when regaining her composure, although her bright smile wouldn't leave her face. "This isn't just any bag, you see." She held it up. It had been the bag she was given during Christmas, specific for that purpose. "This has an Extention Charm on it. All the equipment we need is here." She opened the bag just before it got yanked from her hands by an excessively curious Amber.

"No way." Shoving her hand carelessly inside, she yelped and immediately retrieved it - the tip of her finger was bleeding. She shook the hand lightly before taking the wound to her lips. "Think I just grabbed the hook."

The duo's attention was suddenly grabbed away from one another as they heard a voice that didn't belong to either of them. Glancing at the general direction of the sound, Amber lightly suckled on the injured fingertip while her cousin made the approach.

Sam seemed to brighten up upon sighting the duck on top of this stranger's head. She loved animals. The girl lowered herself, bending her knees to be at the same level as the wild bird while responding to the clearly foreign individual. "I wouldn't mind keeping it as a pet, but I don't think it would agree too much!" She said in good humor.

"We can just take the duck, y'know." Amber suggested as she nursed the very mild wound. "Roast it. We don't even need to fish anymore, and we'd have some camp f--OW!" The girl stumbled backwards after a slap to the front of her right calf muscle, although she was more terrified of the death glare she received from Samantha more than anything else. 'Veelas are scary...'

Nox snickered a little as they watched the two mess with a bag that easily swallowed one of their hands deeper than a normal bag should, (at the sacrifice of a pricked finger), before turning their attention to the one who excitedly approached them—or, hopefully, the duck.

Fortunately, they were a fan of the duck, but hadn't committed to taking it off Nox's hands. The raven-haired wix smiled with a thoughtful hum and  bobbed back down into the water to wet their gills, trying to refocus their attention away from this person's infectious energy and pretty looks and back onto the waterfowl problem.

Then the injured one spoke up and Nox's hazel eyes then over to them as they offered a more edible and immediate solution. And it was a solution they immediately got slapped for.

Nox gave a throaty laugh as the duck seemed to ruffle its feathers and gave a quiet quack of disapproval.

"Don't t'ink it agrees wit' you," the ranger added with a chuckle.

"Maybe keep just keep 'dem distracted?" Nox stood back up in the shallows again, "'Dem smart enough to know I'm looking for likkle carp but rude enough to photobomb my shots to catch some." They lifted up their camera tray for the two to see their phone and camera.

Finally, Nox pushed the duck off their head and into the water in front of the violent-yet-animal-friendly fisherperson, "I can even tell you where all 'dem fish at deh," they then jerked a thumb back towards to the lake, as the duck contently sat in the water and waited.

"Wait a minute." Amber's gaze squinted as she recovered from the admittedly harmless slap, focusing on the gills this person seemed to have. "Yo! How'dya do that? Or are you some sorta mer...person...thing?" It seemed endlessly more entertaining than whatever it was Samantha wanted to have her do. Besides, knowing how the cousins were when near bodies of water, for as stupid as Amber could be, she wouldn't be stupid enough to leave her house without swimwear. One would always end up tackling the other. A simple preventive measure! She might as well join this person!

"Gillyweed." The Bourke mentioned, her affinity with the element granting her a better ease of understanding anything and everything regarding that area. She set the bag down and reached into it with both hands, not having nearly the same trouble as Amber to retrieve what she wanted - a simple black tupperware box. As she opened it, fish bait was revealed to be inside - this made Amber retch somewhat and take a step back.

She hated creepy crawlies.

"For such a death defying little daredevil, your stomach gets upset with very little." Samantha commented while retrieving a single worm, proceeding to close its container immediately after. Turning to the duck and its carrier, she held out the live bait as means of luring the fowl off of their head. "C'mere. It's lunch time!" She proclaimed.

"...I can't roast a duck, but you want to fish and are feeding worms to that damn thing... The hell's the difference here...?"

These two were proving more and more entertaining by the minute as one seemed to wildly speculate about Nox's gills and the other supplied a no-nonsense explanation for them. It wasn't entirely correct but it was close enough, and the metamorph felt no need to  add anything more to it.

"So yuh use gillyweed a lot?" they asked the closest one.

When the fish bait came out with the retching, Nox rolled their lips together to hold in their laughter, but, when the comment about this person being a queasy daredevil came out, they couldn't help but bark it out.

The duck flapped its wings to regain its balance as Nox added, "Ducks have more human-like personality 'den worms. Makes 'dem easy to relate to." Finally, the duck hopped of Nox's head and swam towards the fish bait, curiously, though they kep the junior ranger in their line of vision.

"If you want to catch fish wit yuh hands though, I can go fetch some freshwater gilly." Nox offerred with an easygoing lilt of their voice. Then, without a change in tone or expression, they added, "Just tastes like mint."

"I'm Nox, by 'di way"
