Moriah's never been known for having a pleasant personality by any stretch of the imagination. It's as if she doesn't even bother trying - the girl is as blunt as they come, speaking her mind with a complete disregard for whether it hurts who's on the receiving end of her words or not, with a healthy dose of dry humor for good measure. Given her nature as a loner she doesn't feel the need to be nice to others as she doesn't want them around anyway most of the time, and as such her lack of filter has branded her as a bit of a jerk at times.
While she is very intelligent she doesn't like showing it off much at all, feeling like bringing attention to herself will only make it so others won't leave her be. It's made her very observant of others, however, and she often picks up on small details most people might let slide. It's not uncommon for her to employ her tidbits of knowledge in a particularly well crafted insult in case a given person happens to get under her skin. She doesn't take much sadistic satisfaction in doing so, only wanting not to deal with most people.
That is not to say one can't break through that hostile veneer - should someone bring up one of her few interests, they have her full attention. Whether it be books, Quidditch or Astronomy, it's easy to play to her fascinations and bring a more intensely social side out of her who is looking to gush about the topics and soak in as much information as the other person can give about them. Just don't tell her she sucks at flying, her ego can only take so much.
She isn't one to reveal any type interest she may have on someone at any point in time, turning to denial whenever that happens, if not being outright mean to them. It's like pulling teeth to get her to admit she likes someone as a friend, a crush or anything else as her pessimist side has her believe it's a waste of time and at least her books won't betray her, while other people are likely to. Nevertheless she sometimes does nice things for them under various excuses to ensure what she perceives as a weakness isn't found out.
Despite a fully developed sense of humor, Moriah is actually quite serious in nature, preferring to think and work before acting and having fun. She also has a bookish and studious streak to her, aiming to become an astronomer at some point in the future and determined to do whatever it takes (within reason) to accomplish her dream. She feels deeply humbled by space, feeling like it puts into perspective just how insignificant humans are, magic or no magic; and as such, she seeks to study something that's so much greater than herself.
Unlike most would have you believe, she lacks a competitive spirit despite her stellar grades. She's aware that her parents see that as a red flag and minimal reason for disappointment, something that discreetly eats away at her during her darkest hours, but she's vowed to remain independent and go on her own way rather than submitting to someone else. She believes her life is her own and nobody should have a say in it, even if it turns out pathetic in the end.
Despite wanting to break free from her family, she's grown appreciative of the effort they put in raising her, even if it meant having her move across the country to pursue an education. As such she's subconsciously inclined to protect her own flesh and blood more than others even if she dislikes them, unless something about them is deeply offensive to her principles.
Moriah's stature has never been much to speak of, standing at a short 156 cm, although it doesn't bother her too much. She's very light despite how much she eats, being blessed by a fast metabolism, and her build is slim as she's very much a disaster in all things sporty (much to her chagrin).
Much like the vast majority of her family, she's inherited their distinguishing red hair, although in a bit of a darker shade than her fellow ginger kin. Her eyes are grey and there's a perpetual sense of boredom of her face, or even annoyance, and few can claim to have seen her sprout a genuine smile rather than one consequent of her apparent sadism.
There seems to be a modicum of vanity to the girl as she does pay attention to how she presents herself, paradoxically going against her need for solitude as it's not too difficult for her to draw attention to herself that way. She seems to know what she has to work with well and how to bring out her own best features with clothing and makeup without much trouble.
A loner by nature, Moriah's never had much at all in the way of friends, being quite wary of letting someone too close. Her general attitude towards others doesn't help in the least regarding anyone that could potentially be interested in approaching her. She's somewhat aware that she can't stay that way for her entire life, but since in her mind school-based relationships are doomed to die somewhere down the line as everyone moves on with their lives she's somewhat confident that she can afford to enjoy her solitude with little consequence in the future.
She's fond of her parents, even if she wouldn't admit it. She greatly respects them over the sacrifice they've made for her and is determined to repay it in some fashion once she's able. As for the rest of her family, she deems them to be mostly loonies and isn't that interested in engaging them at all, though would still help them if necessary.
She has no experience and is rather oblivious when it comes to romance despite her observant ways. She's had a couple of crushes in the past she's refused to admit or even make a move on, opting to give them the cold shoulder until the feeling went away, as if afraid of being betrayed by them eventually.
Moriah seems to find it quite humorous when someone doesn't like her, and even moreso if they're verbal about it. She meets these folks with disparaging comments, almost as if baiting them to strike back. Needless to say, she doesn't lose a wink of sleep at night over someone disliking her, which she already assumes is the norm to begin with.
Moriah was born in Brisbane to Jocelyn, a pureblood witch, and Jonas Wyrick, a halfblood hailing from Germany. The man had relocated to the area due to work with the Queensland Ministry. Life was mostly mundane, save for her parents' occasional quirks (something she found quite boring, as she just wanted to be left alone most of the time) and her extended family's peculiarities.
She had been meant to enroll in the Fox Heights School for Young Witches and Wizardry to pursue her magical education, but unexpected monetary issues caused a private school not to be on the cards for the Wyrick family. Brokenhearted, her parents ultimately sent her all the way down to Victoria so she could go to Tallygarunga, refusing to keep her from learning more about their world and talent.
Moriah's never felt like a good fit for Tallygarunga. A large percentage of the student body was wild and rowdy, playing pranks all over the place, while she just wished to be left alone with her books. The annoyance contributed to the development of the sharp tongue she is known for today, and as she's crossing the halfway point of her academical career in the subpar school, she feels like her patience is about to run out. If only she could fast forward through her time in the annoying school...
