Welcome to Tallygarunga, an original roleplay set in the Harry Potter universe. Set in present-day Australia, tensions are high between the Ministry of Magic and the only Ministry-run wizarding school in the country. Become like the other snooty private schools? Not a chance.

Originally established in August 2006, Tallygarunga prides itself on an inclusive and active community. Once part of the Tally family, always part of the Tally family. Whether you're here for the first time, the thousandth time, or returning after a long time---welcome home.

      General Knowledge:

      Kind of scary
Don't mess with the garden (The snap dragons bite!)
Watch out for the faerie ring behind the bungalow
      Makes really nice cookies

Rue is diminutive at 145cm. She is slender and pale skinned with bright red hair and luminous green eyes.

She often wears paler colours of green and brown earthy tones. Her cloak is white with an amaranth lining. Her fingers, hands and arms are covered in scars of all different sizes and shapes from creature bites and plant thistles.
Her fingertips are nearly always stained green from the garden. She smells of herbs and crushed flowers, most often the belladonna plant as it runs riot all around her little bungalow.

Rue is odd. She’s always been odd. There’s just something mildly unsettling about her. It could be her eyes, that startling shade of green that almost seems to glow. Or the way she moves, which is slow and methodical until it isn’t. Maybe it’s how she smells of strange plants. The eyes that follow her in the bush.

She seems normal enough. She’ll smile and offer you tea. Maybe some cake. But the tea has a strange aftertaste, something sweet and sour that lingers on your tongue. You feel calmer once you leave her bungalow. You don’t get the sense she would ever hurt you, but she it seems unwise to anger her.

In truth this is because Rue has some Fae in her. But it also reflects in her personality. She is very cordial to everyone she meets, she’ll do you a favour in a heartbeat. But the favour always comes with an expectation of something in return and you won’t know what it is until she asks.

Rue also has a tendency to be spiteful, often over seemingly petty things. Snap a twig off an old gum tree, find spider silk thrown around your bedroom. Swear in the presence of a magical creature, have your cornflakes turn to bitter nettles. Her revenges seem almost as odd as the perceived slight. No student will ever come to serious harm and she is far more likely to give them a detention. However misconduct around the Neighbours will earn you a harsh reprimand in the form of a karmic backlash or nasty punishment. It may even be painful, depending on the slight. But Rue does this to protect the students. She exacts revenge in place of the Neighbours who would have inflicted far worse. Students who fail to learn proper conduct must either say nothing, or leave her classroom.

Her class is Herbology, but she calls upon the Fae to help and many of them visit her bungalow for a potion, tonic or other magical item. Learning to interact with them is a survival skill important to any witch or wizard, so she conducts classes outside her bungalow.
Students are rarely invited inside as there is a lot of delicate magic going on in there.

Rue loves children in her own way. She’ll protect them against all harm to the best of her ability, no matter how horrible they are. Children are children and they are still learning. But there are limits to her influence over the Fae only goes so far. Her kinship with them means that she can get away with things most mortals would be killed for, but there are some lines even she cannot cross.
Just because she loves children doesn’t mean she’s any good at interacting with them. Obviously she can easily frighten a lot of the younger ones. She doesn’t expect to have many little ones with her in her first year.

She is also careful of overstepping her bounds in case the Ministry of Magic ups her threat level. She despises them for their prejudice against non-humans and finds it very hard to hide her disdain.
When she is angry or dislikes someone she very rarely says so directly, hiding behind passive aggression and double entendre. She will never fail to give you a friendly smile, though that in itself can be a little creepy.

Connections:Optional. As your character meets and collects new friends and foes, you can note down the connections here -- or list existing ones if they already have them!
Significant Dates:Optional. Remembering dates is hard, so if there are particular dates you want to list that are important to your character, here is a nice field to put them in!

Rue was born in South Australia on a bush property an hour or so outside of Ceduna. Her family consisted of a single father raising her along with two other sisters and his elderly mother. Her grandma took care of the children while her father worked in town.

She was a solitary child and more than a little odd. Out of all the children in her class, she consistently caused the most trouble. Frogs in the fishtank, a baby wallaby in the lost property basket, odd writing all over the classroom walls, children crying about curses and bunyips. Her father was at a loss.

It only got worse once she entered primary school. Finally her grandma took her aside and had a long conversation during which her father was not allowed in the kitchen. After that every weekend and Friday afternoon they would pack a lunch and go walking in the bush. Her dad wasn't sure what they did, but Rue was much calmer in school.

Then when she turned eleven, her father woke at midnight to smell burning. Fearing the worst, he entered her bedroom and discovered the incense, the small animal bones and dried plants strewn everywhere with his youngest daughter sitting in the middle, smeared with charcoal.
He was furious. Her grandma only scolded her for attempting such an advanced spell. An explanation was due. Her father and grandma had a long conversation and Rue could understand very little of it from listening at the keyhole. But in the morning her father seemed calm and her grandma was writing a letter. The letter was addressed to the Principal of Tallygarunga.
'Sorry, but could you accept a late student?'

It wasn't the old magic. It wasn't traditional. They wouldn't teach her how to find a hagstone, or charm a faerie knight. But her grandma was too old to teach her, too frail to keep up with her energy.
Rue attended Tally the following year and became quite notorious for her pranks. Fortunately she grew a sense of responsibility and no one was ever seriously hurt.
