Orion is an independent, somewhat sociable, somewhat funny, somewhat stubborn young man. His life has always been full of 'somewhat' and 'possibly'. Growing up in a sheltered community, he was used to the people around him and felt he could relax and let his guard down. In Australia, he feels a little wary and a little guarded, but he does have his moments where his true personality shines through. He's been known to pick on people he finds affection for and he's rather protective of those he's loyal to. He is sometimes quick to anger and sometimes even prone to walking away from a fight rather than get his fists or wand involved. Those who do not know him may see him as a big lumbering jock. Those who do know him see someone who's just a touch lost and trying to make sense in his place of all of this.
Orion Arua was born on March 20, 2000 to Mia Arua in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. While his Muggleborn mother was originally from Cairns, she had moved to Port Moresby to study archaeology. There are many pictures of his childhood as a young boy with his mother at many of her dig sites. He was always the goofy, smiling child, often with teeth missing. His first wand was gifted to him shortly before his eleventh birthday, something his mother was very proud of.
The Aruas were part of a magical community in Port Moresby. There may not have been a magical school there, but they did teach their children magical knowledge. Orion knew how to fly from an early age and was quite adept at handling his broomstick. His better subjects were the more hands-on ones, while sometimes book knowledge completely overwhelmed him.
Orion often spent his days dreaming about being in the water. The sea was always calling him back. He loved to paddle in the lagoons or surf among the towering waves. Whatever time he wasn't out at a dig site or up in the air, he was out in the water. He made friends among the local fishermen, even those that were Muggle. He never once flaunted the fact he had magic to them, but he did desire the experience of being out on the sea.
His mother was often out of their home and he was raised by an entire community. He considered them all aunts and uncles and the other magical children were his cousins. He was particularly close to a girl he called his sister, even though they were not related by birth, he considered her blood. Despite being a year younger, she was rather adept at getting him caught up in his book studies. Her parents were second parents to Orion and there were weeks he stayed at their house instead of at his own empty house.
This all changed in 2015. Mia finally came clean about his paternity. She was reluctant at first, but when Atlas Karras caught up to her, she was forced to admit that their liaison years earlier had given her a son. This son was fiercely independent and had an entire community looking after him. Still, the man persisted and Orion finally met his birth father. He was not the man that Orion expected him to be. His mother had only loved archaeology and her work was more important than any romantic partner.
At first, Orion did not trust his birth father, who insisted that he attend school in Australia of all places. He had been to Cairns to visit his grandparents before, so he was not unfamiliar with the country. He wanted nothing more than to keep his current life with his family and friends and knowing what he wanted to be when he grew up.
Moving to Melbourne and attending Tallygarunga was a change and a half for Orion. He was unfamiliar with actual cities and found himself a little lost. This wasn't the close-knit community he had come from. He felt as though he had been thrown into a lion's den and began resenting his father for that very reason. He also had heard rumors that he had other siblings out there, but he has yet to meet any of them.
Entering his final year, Orion still has zero idea of what his future holds. He still prefers to be outside and live on the water or play in the air, but there are more options now than he could have imagined. He is just trying to figure out hos place in all of this.
Orion is a tall, sturdy young man. He stands at 186 cm and has black hair and dark green eyes. His heritage is mixed with Australian, Malaysian and Greek. He has good muscle tone and structure from years spent outdoors. He wears his hair longer than normal, mostly because he didn't have the time or find it necessary to trim it. He musculature comes from playing Quidditch and being in the water. He is a bona fide water baby, loving anything from swimming and snorkeling to diving, paddle boarding, surfing and parasailing. His skin tone has always been a touch darker than normal because of all the time he has spent in the sun. His personal favorite feature is his hands, which are both muscular and shapely. These were the hands that could pull fish from the surf.
He is most often at home in board shorts and t-shirts, but around actual civilization, he is known to dress up some. He has grown rather fond of wizarding robes.
Orion himself has been a secret all of his life, never even knowing his birth father before 2015.
He never wanted to be a wizard. He was perfectly content living in the jungle with his mum. He has some resentment issues with his birth father for getting involved.
Harbors a dream of running a shrimping boat.
Orion was an exchange student his fifth year, coming from Papua New Guinea.
Really likes being outside. While the water is his favorite, he does quite enjoy Quidditch, too.
Terrible book-learner. He prefers practical lessons where he can work with his hands.
