There were a great many things that Kenna wanted to get accomplished in the day and she had barely gotten through the list. Granted she was likely attempting to do way too much in a day. That was fairly common for the brunette and she sighed. She would have to make sure she got a little bit more accomplished before she was forced to sit at the front desk at the inn and check people in. It could get so boring and she often found herself in more trouble than she was used to. Even now as she was walking through the hallways she was attempting to read and make plans. That was becoming next to impossible and she frowned for a moment as her plans looked more like her reading. Tucking the plans into her pocket she looked at her notes. She however looked up ad realized she had gone the wrong was a touch disoriented.

How in the hell did you get lost in the same hallways you had been walking for years? Kenna was the sort of person who seemed to do that. She laughed at herself and decided that maybe tucking away her reading was a good thing for now. Placing the text under her arm she made a point to look where she was before she managed to turn herself around and head back to her common area to attempt to smile. She let out a small sigh as she walked slowly. It was more of a trudging than anything else. She didn’t really want to study anymore but she was hardly prepared for the last exam.

It seemed she was in luck as someone brushed past her and dropped something. ”Oh.” She said as she stooped to pick the item up. They had kept walking and so Kenne jogged slightly, and a little awkwardly, to them. ”Hey!” She called out with a small smile. ”You dropped this…” She said as she held it out the them.”Sorry, you dropped this.” She said once more, once she had caught up with them.

Noah had not had a good day.

Vacation was almost upon them, and he had been looking forward to it for months. Every time he sat down to study, he daydreamed about hanging out at Isaac's place - a good old-fashioned muggle house, where Noah wasn't expected to perform magic and, even better, muggle tech was abundant - and playing PUBG or Mario Kart (or I Am Bread or Overcooked or hell, Snipper Clips) with his best friend. So when he sat down at Basil's Internet Cafe this afternoon, he was in high spirits.

Those spirits quickly plummeted when he read the e-mail Isaac had sent him, the most recent in a years-long chain:

Hey, so... remember how I told you Gabe got his driver's license? Now he has a CAR, too! His parents got him a used one - it's a crappy old junker, but it works. So now he offered to take all of us, me, Kate, and Tim, on a road trip. And you know how much I like Kate, and her parents are letting her go, so I asked mom and dad if I could go, and they ACTUALLY SAID YES! I have to call home every night to check in, but I can go.

I know you wanted to hang while you're home from boarding school, and I'll try when I get back... but this might be my chance with Kate! I gotta go. And I'll bring my Switch along, so ask your parents for one for Christmas and we'll play.

Today marked the first time ever that Noah read a message from Isaac and didn't respond. He didn't know what to say. He had already asked his parents to get him a Nintendo Switch, and they had said no - why should they spend so much money on a toy he could only use on school vacations? He explained that he could bring it to school, too, and wander outside the institution's magical influence when he wanted to play, but this just made his parents fear that Noah would become even more isolated at Tally than he already was. No, they said, he would have to content himself with playing his TV games (that's what they called them, no matter how many times he corrected them) at Isaac's house. And now both the games and Isaac were gone.

Noah paid the cashier for his computer time, stuck the receipt in his pocket, and started the long haul back to school.

He was almost back at the dorm, where he would sit in his room and fume or mope (he wasn't sure which) until he could come to terms with his situation, when he bumped past someone in the hall. Focused exclusively on making it to his bed, he did not notice whom he bumped into, or turn around to apologize as he normally would. He kept going until he heard whoever it was call to him.

What now?

He turned to see Kenna holding something out to him. Upon closer reflection, he saw it was the receipt he got at the internet cafe. It must have fallen out of his pocket when he bumped into - well, it must have been Kenna, since they were the only two in the hall.

"Thanks, Kenna" he said, taking the receipt back and stuffing it into his pocket once more. "Sorry I bumped into you."

It was surprisingly unlike Noah to be rude, then again there was very little that anyone could be blamed for when they were in the middle of end of the term exams. They always made people act a bit crazy. Not that Kenna had been acting too much like herself either. Usually she was a far more chipper individual and she had no problems with how she would handle situations. Letting out a small shrug followed by a smile. ”Its okay.” She didn’t think it wa huge deal, it was not as through he had meant to run into her, nor did he knock her over. ”Exams have everyone- everywhere.’ She said with a smile. It was just the nature of the beast she supposed.

However, Noah seemed a little more out of it than usual. Kenna rather liked the young man in front of her, then again she didn’t seem to have too many issues with those she had met here. She had been rather easy going when it came down to it. She smiled at him. ”Headed back to the common room? I managed to get lost in my notes…” She said with a small sheepish shrug. ”Walk with me?” She asked him. Though taking off for their common room anyway. She kept her stride to match his. Glancing sideways at him. ”How are your exams coming?” She asked conversationally.

She then paused. ”Are you okay? You seem a little out of it…” She asked him finally, they had not been super close but she didn’t think she had seem him like this- there was a lot of pressure in exams… she shook her head.

Kenna assumed that Noah's problem was exams. That was a sensible assumption: the whole general mood on campus changed when finals rolled around. Noah seized the opportunity to avoid having to explain himself. "Exams are killer, yeah," he agreed, flashing a small (forced) smile. He and Kenna had sat next to each other in Potions a couple of years ago, and they were on good terms, but they weren't very close - Kenna was often off campus putting hours in at the family business (Noah thought it was a hotel of sorts?), and Noah, for his part, was rarely around. Noah didn't yet feel comfortable enough to open up to her, and besides, he didn't want to burden her with his life drama when she had exams to deal with.

He nodded when Kenna asked if he was on his way to the common room, and when she suggested they make the journey together, he smiled again (a little less forced this time) and said "Sure." A large part of him still wanted to be alone, so he could process the disappointment he was feeling without having to pretend he was ok, but he had to admit that it felt nice to have a conversation with a classmate, outside of the passing "Hey"s he would get in the halls and common room. "My exams have been... ok. I think I've passed the ones I've taken so far." On a normal day he would have reciprocated the question and asked how Kenna's exam went, but this was not a normal day.

Then Kenna asked if he was really ok. Noah had to give her credit for her perceptiveness, he really thought he could get away with blaming his mood on finals. "I'm fine," he lied casually, automatically. He was used to giving this answer when people asked how he was: he didn't have any good friends at Tally, and when acquaintances asked how you were, they usually didn't really want to know. But Kenna wasn't asking to make conversation, she seemed genuinely concerned. She deserved more of an answer. "I mean... I'll be fine," he corrected himself. "I'm just dealing with some stuff right now."

Duh, Captain Obvious. That explains a lot.

He was having a hard time deciding how much to tell Kenna. Maybe he could let her in, just a little bit... but she couldn't know about his fondness (preference?) for muggle life.

"Trying to figure out what to do during the break."

Well, it was a start.

Kenna never minded the idea of listening to others. The idea that it was a burden was one that she ws always one she didn’t understand, maybe that was simply her. Or the fact the guests at the inn often talked to her about things. She knew way more about the intricacies of marriage than she probably should at this point. Or how much people hated the idea of being alone and talking to a teenager seemed to be the cure when they were staying there. Kenna didn’t mind she was often bored anyway. It sucked, she should be with her friends when she wanted to be but she didn’t really have much say in it. The family business was the family business.”Good, that’s good.” She said in response.

”I think I did okay, Arithmancy really took it’s toll on me.” She said shaking her head. ”I didn’t finish but I don’t think anyone else did either.” It had been a rather challenging exam- but then she struggled with the class all year. ”I hope I passed my dad would not be thrilled if I didn’t.” She said with a small laugh and a shrug. The truth was she didn’t think they cared because she honestly was expected to take over the inn and in spite of what she wanted to do, and she was not sure what she wanted to do. She went back and forth- maybe she wanted to be in government work, or teach… or something. She went back and forth. It didn’t really matter. She was babbling a little but that was fairly typical.

Kenna watched him as he said he was fine, not believable the idea that he would be]/i] fine. Nodding at him. ”I am sorry that you are.” She said before she touched his arm a little. It seemed like it was a good thing to do, she always liked the touch of someone when she was upset. ”Anything you want to talk about? I mean I most likely wont be able to help solve a problem but the guests at the inn seem to enjoy talking to me and I just listen.” She said with a shrug. It was not like she really expected him to open up about things right away- but the offer would stand. ”I mean if you don’t want to talk now… but do later you can.” She said as she shrugged her shoulders once more.

”If you need something to do I can convince my parents to hire someone else. It would be nice to have company and it’s really easy work. I sit and check people in and out, bring them towels that kind of thing.” She would like company she may not get so bored. ”Oh and tell them about places they should go and where to eat. And it would give me someone to gossip to.” She said with a small smile. ”You would be surprised how much people would tell you.”

"Oh man, not finishing is so freakin' stressful!" Noah was glad to find someone who shared this problem, which he had had on many tests in his day. "The worst for me is when it's an essay exam. I write as fast as I can the whole time but I still never finish." I wish I could just type the damn thing, he added in his head. He never took to quill and parchment the way he did to a QWERTY keyboard.

At this point, his brain caught up to his mouth and he realized Kenna had said something else about exams - that her father would not be happy if she didn't pass. Noah had assumed this was the case for all families (perhaps having a father in the Ministry skewed his idea of parental expectations), but something about the way she said it made the statement feel important. "I'm sure you passed it. And if not, it's only one subject, right? Your dad has to know that nobody can be good at everything."

When she asked if he wanted to discuss what was on his mind, he demurred. "Eh, I dunno that it would help. Thanks for the offer, though." Noah decided this sounded a little too much like he was brushing her off, which wasn't his intention at all - he just didn't feel up to opening his heart to that extent. But he added: "I really do appreciate it."

Then Kenna offered to see if she could get Noah hired at her family's inn over the break. As she explained what the work would entail, Noah's thoughts went something like this:

If you need something to do I can convince my parents to hire someone else. It would be nice to have company and it’s really easy work.

Wow, that's really nice of her to offer!

I sit and check people in and out, bring them towels that kind of thing. Oh and tell them about places they should go and where to eat.

The work sounds super boring, though...

And it would give me someone to gossip to. You would be surprised how much people would tell you.

That might be fun. I'd get to know Kenna more, and she seems awesome. I'd also interact with may more people than I would at home. Even though I'd be working...

Work means money.
Money means I can buy my own Nintendo Switch.
Buying my own Nintendo Switch means I can play video games any time I want!

"You really think your parents would do that?" he asked excitedly. "That would be amazing!"

Kenna nodded emphatically. ”It is the worst feeling there is oh my gods.” She said glad that she was not the only one who struggled with this. ”Sometimes I think that they do it just see us furiously write. I used a self inking quill too.” she frowned at the the fact it had not offered her much help as she furiously wrote. It was a good exam and she felt like she did okay. But not finishing- who really knew what that meant. ”They make it so hard sometimes.” Kenna just liked to daydream too so who knew where the line really was. She smiled at Noah.

”My dad thinks that I may rely on my looks on account of my mom, and so he’s pretty adamant that I have a good education and don’t fall back on being pretty” He was in love with her mom, but she also knew that she and her mom often got treated different because they were veelas. Even if she was not full she did know sometimes she got a reaction… Shifting her weight for a moment she nodded. ”Well, if you ever want to talk about it… I am pretty good at listening like I said. I had one woman talk about her husband and his cheating for hours and I didn’t say a word.” She said with a smile that nearly split her face in two.

”My mom has been complaining about needing more help… I think I could totally convince her. I can just tell my dad you have helped me study and that’s all he’ll need… so we should probably study… so that it’s not a lie.” She said it wouldn’t be too hard they could just sit and review notes. ”That and you are not in trouble and my friend…” It was sort of the truth she liked Noah enough. ”That and I complain a lot and this would help…”She liked the idea of conspiring to get help and it seemed like Noah could use it. ”I mean if you really want to I have no problem asking them, or telling them…”

"Do self-inking quills help?" Noah asked, genuinely interested. Although using a quill was painstaking for him, he didn't think that inking it was the problem. Although perhaps the pauses to re-ink added up. Frankly, he could use all the help he could get, even if it was minor.

Noah wrinkled his nose as Kenna explained why her dad was concerned about her education. "That's kinda crappy of your dad..." he began. He knew that he shouldn't diss a man who could potentially give him a job, but he felt the need to defend Kenna. "Why would he assume you would do that? Not that you couldn't, if you wanted to, but if he knew you at all he'd know you wouldn't." Noah didn't know Kenna that well, but even he could see from sitting next to her in Year 4 Potions that she was bright and always tried her hardest in class. She didn't seem like the type to coast on her looks. Noah was also curious what her mother had to do with the whole thing, but he felt it wasn't best to pry.

Kenna smiled when she told him about being a confidante for one of the inn customers. "Did the woman end up leaving her husband?" he wondered. He hoped so: Noah felt that everyone deserved to be happy, and that woman clearly wasn't.

When Kenna posited that she could probably convince her parents to hire him, it was Noah's turn to smile. He smiled a little wider when she referred to him as a friend. He knew it wasn't totally true right now, that it was just Kenna being nice - but he thought that if he did get this job, perhaps the two really would be friends by the end of the break. "Yes, absolutely, that would be amazing," he responded to her offer to convince her parents. "What exams do you have left?" He didn't know how much help he would be as a study partner, seeing as he wasn't great at studying himself, but he was prepared to try.

Kenna shrugged. ”It helps me because I don’t break focus… but I don’t know if it helps with the time honestly… That and I don’t leave too many splotches on the paper.” That was very important to her, she liked the appearance of clean… she felt that had to do with the fact she spent so much of her time cleaning up at work. ”I don’t really know though.” she shrugged once more. Kenna was not always sure but it was rare she admitted that. There was something safe about Noah that she coudlnt really put her finger on. She didn’t think he would exploit the vulnerability and that was a pretty heavy thing in her book. She smiled at him.

”Oh no, he means well.” She assured him. ”My mom is a Veela.” She admitted. It was not always something she shared, it was fairly obvious when the woman walked into the room. ”He doesn’t want me to get lazy… I get it…” she said. ”My mom opened the business because she wanted to do something and my dad just supported her, he used to be a fact checker for the Ministry. He’s actually really nerdy.” She said with a smile. It was kind of cute to see her parents together. They didn’t make sense but then when you saw how they were they made so much sense. It was just one of those weird things.

”she did thankfully, she came back like 3 months later with her boyfriend and he was really cute…” She said with a smile. Kenna was rather happy that the woman had left the man who had made her so unhappy. Kenna hoped she wouldn’t end up like that. She wanted something like her parents had. It was kind of romantic the nerdy man and the Veela. ”I would think it was a trade up if you ask me.”

She nodded as though this was fact. ”Well, I still have care of magical creatures but that should be fairly simple this year. I feel pretty confident about this.” She said. ”What about you? How did you do on the potions final? That was brutal yeah?” She had to work much harder on that one than she did the care of magical creatures, the creatures just sort of came naturally to her. She wanted to do something with that, she just didn’t know how… but for now she was to work at the Inn.

"Hmm, I should definitely get one..." Noah mused about self-inking quills. "I can barely read my own exams after I'm done with them, I have no idea how the professors do it. But I'm guessing they would appreciate it if I made it easier." He grinned at Kenna. The rest of his day hadn't been good, but it had been getting steadily better as they talked. It was nice to talk to someone about problems, even if they weren't the most pressing problems in his life.

So, Kenna's mom was a Veela. Noah didn't think he had ever met one before, but he had heard a little bit about them. Mainly:

1. They were always gorgeous; and
2. You did not want to get on their bad side

However, from the way Kenna described her mom, Noah supposed that perhaps that she didn't have much of the famous Veela temper. Kenna didn't seem to have much of it either, although she certainly had the looks.

"I mean, I guess that makes sense" Noah said when Kenna explained her father's desire to prevent her from becoming lazy. Privately, he still felt that Kenna wasn't the sort of person that would take advantage of her ancestry in that way, but as long as she was ok with being pushed a little, he was fine with it. "When did your dad leave the Ministry? Mine has always been there, although he used to work in the English branch, way before I was born. He's in Commerce & Business. Maybe they've bumped into each other."

Noah was genuinely relieved about the inn customer's happy ending. "I'm glad," he said, "but let's be real: almost anyone would be a trade-up from a lying scumbag."

"Ugh, the Potions final was a monster," he lamented. "How can anyone remember that many ingredients? I studied for hours and hours and I'm just hoping I ended up with a somewhat average score. How was it for you? The only final I have left is Magical Law and Government." Noah had taken the class simply to have a break from actually performing magic, and did not expect to enjoy it. For the most part, it had been as boring as he expected. However, it had taught him about a Ministry department he had never heard of: Magical Research & Innovation. Apparently, the department researched new ways to use magic - especially ways to blend it with Muggle tech. Noah could not be more excited about this prospect, and immediately decided that he wanted to work there after he graduated. He felt indebted to the professor for giving him this information, so he tried harder in this class than most. As a result, he had notes to brush up on, but didn't think studying would take too long.

”It can’t hurt.” she liked them for notes too, it seemed easier when she wasn’t stopping to dip the quill. Maybe that was the sort of lazy, however she didn’t actually care if she was a little lazy when it came to note taking that just meant she would be able to take faster notes and then be able to read them. ”I think they must have a charm. To take them away and them put them back.” she suggested with a smile. It was an interesting thing, sometimes she thought that they would hide some things from them and later when they chose their professions. Some of the stuff was useful but not always the most practical.

Letting out a small sigh she nodded. ”I guess, it was a bit of a fight between my mom and dad. You should have seen it.” She made a wide face. She had not gotten that mad yet, but she knew she had to be careful. Kenna didn’t always make a lot of waves for that purpose. She didn’t want to cause too much trouble. Or well any trouble actually she liked passing under the radar. It made for easy everything most of all. ”About 4 years ago, the Inn was starting to be busy and my mom needed help and so he left… It’s been pretty good since honestly.” he said with a smile. Then looked at him.

”I bet they have. That may work in out favor then with this whole job thing!” She said rather excited. Anything to make the hours at the inn less dreadful. There were only so many times she could listen to stories about someone’s cheating husband before she lost her mind. ”Oh for sure, she was a pretty woman too, I don’t think I understood why he cheated on her her… but then I suppose I don’t understand much about marriages, or relationships to begin with.” Not that she needed to have the experience to empathize with someone about being hurt.

”It was absolutely barbaric.” She said with a smile and then looked at him and sighed. ”Oh Do you like Professor Wolfe?” She asked she had heard good things about the man. Though she had not taken the class. It was not something that interested her. ”Is that what you want to do? Be an Auror?”

Kenna thought the professors had charms to clean up student handwriting - and then make the exams messy again before handing them back. "Either that, or they're just used to awful handwriting from their students. Like nurses can read doctors' handwriting, and nobody else can." The comparison was out of his mouth before Noah thought about it, but as soon as he said it, he realized it could be a mistake. The stereotype about doctors' handwriting was true in the muggle world, but he wasn't sure it would carry over to the wizarding world. And magical medical staff were called Healers, anyway. Noah's outward expression didn't change, but inside he was tense, waiting to see if she noticed his slip-up.

"I'm glad that running the inn has worked out for your parents. What's your dad's name? I'll ask my dad if they've met! Also I'll ask if I can work at the inn over break, but I'm pretty sure he'll say yes." Noah's parents were constantly worried about how lonely he was at school. He never complained about it, but he never talked about any school friends, either, so it must have been obvious. His parents would jump at the chance to let him spend quality time with a schoolmate (and the fact that it would keep him from sinking further into muggle life was a plus, too).

"I don't think cheating is about trying to get someone better, I think it's about trying to get someone new,"Noah said thoughtfully, "Not that I know anything about relationships either." Just what I've seen on TV, he successfully restrained himself from adding.

When Kenna asked about the Magical Government and Law, he paused a moment. "Professor Wolfe is really knowledgeable, and I've learned a lot," he said carefully, trying to properly articulate his feelings about the man, "But I don't know anything about him, really. Even in class you can never tell if he enjoys the subject or not. You can't tell what he's thinking at all." He laughed after Kenna asked if he wanted to be an Auror. "No no no. But I might want to go into the Ministry, and I've learned a lot about how it functions." Of course, the original reason he took the class was to avoid learning more magic, uncomfortable as he was that he didn't know how magic fundamentally worked, but he couldn't say that. "What do you want to do? Join the family business?" He hoped that this line of questioning would prevent her from delving deeper into his aspirations.

She laughed as he said something about doctors, she was not the most well versed on muggle stuff but she had caught a TV show at her friend’s home. She understood that stereotype. ”Do you spend a lot of time with muggles?” She asked him for a moment, He seemed to know things that other’s didn’t Not that he was strange, there was nothing strange it was a culture and culture was just different and unique. Kenna Appreciated it. She liked to listen about how others lived. Muggles, witches and wizards in other countries, even other parts of Australia. She smiled at the thoughts.

”James Wilson, which is the most generic name ever I am sure there are probably like 30 at least in the Ministry… but he has crazy hair, my mom thinks its his rebellion against all things, his crazy hair. Its not like funny colors but all over the place.” She said with a smile. She loved her dad’s hair. It made him special and identifiable and with a Veela for a wife… it was hard to stand out. ”Oh good!” She said with a smile. This is going to be a great break.”[/b] He said with a smile. She smiled at him. ”I can show you where to hide in the kitchen to hear the gossip too… its another one of my favorite things.”

They had freed elves working in the kitchen and they did like to gossip a little. It was kind of funny. She thought for a moment. ”I don’t get it, but then my dad is crazy about my mom… at least from what I can see.”She didn’t think she was wrong. She smiled at him. ”I just think you should love what you have… why risk losing it all?” she asked. They both seemed rather unskilled in romance but so did everyone else.

Letting out a small laugh she nodded. ”I’ve heard the same…” She said and then looked at him as he said no.”So what do you want to do?” she asked him. She wondered what other things he may like in the ministry. ”Be like your dad?” She asked and then shook her head. ”I want to work with magical creatures but the family business seems to be my path.”

Well, Kenna had caught him referencing muggle stuff - but at least she understood the reference. Now it was time for Noah to downplay. "My parents just sent me to a muggle primary school, so I know a lot about their culture."

Distract. "Apparently my parents caused a few incidents when they moved here from England and didn't know how to blend in. They wanted to make sure I wouldn't do the same."

And change the subject. "Maybe ask your dad if he's ever met a Hal Perrimon? I don't know that 'the one with crazy hair' will help much when you're trying to identify a Ministry official." He grinned at Kenna. There were some straight-laced parts of the Ministry, certainly, but there were also departments known for their quirkiness.

"I'm excited about that," Noah said when Kenna mentioned gossip. "Nobody ever tells me anything here." Did I just sort of admit to not having friends? he thought to himself. Oh well. Just another not-muggle thing we can talk about.

"I guess. My parents seem to have some sort of life plan that they've agreed on, so they never argue about major decisions - at least not in front of me." He smiled. "But it seems to be working out for them." His parents were the only couple he could really look to for an example of a working relationship, because he didn't have any friends in relationships, and he rarely saw his extended family, since they lived in England.

Noah was surprised that Kenna seemed resigned to taking up the mantle of the family business. She didn't seem like the kind of person to accept something she didn't like. "If you want to work with magical creatures, you should do it!" he encouraged her, "You only get one life, you gotta do what you want!" Of course, since Noah did not grow up in a family that ran a business, he could not fully understand the obligations involved - but he could try to help anyway. "Do you have any other siblings that could take it over instead?"

"Nah, I don't wanna be like my dad. He's in the Commerce & Business department, and I can't think of anything more boring. I wanna work for Magical Research & Innovation." Hoping to distract her from asking why he wanted to work for that department, he quickly added: "What specifically would you want to do with magical creatures, if you could?"

”That’s cool.” she said, in earnest. Kenna didn’t think there was anything wrong with muggles. ”Did you like it?”She asked, they all sort of had no choices when it came to where they went for school. She didn’t think it was a bad thing. Honestly, she didn’t understand the major divide here. She shifted on her feet and smiled at him.”I bet you had a rather interesting childhood then… I have only ever lived in Melbourne… and now here… I want to travel someday.” She said a bit dreamy as she said it. It would be a good thing. She said with a smile as she looked at him.

”Did they? What did they do?” She asked rather interested in what would have happened to cause an incident.”Oh it was apparently major when my dad came home with a veela, he made waves for sure. They all thought my mom was using him… but she wasn’t.” she said with a smile. It was kind of cool that her mother did love her father that way.

She laughed. ”That is probably a better idea. I’ll owl them tonight.” Her owl, Paul, was always excited to go home and see her parents they spoiled him. Kenna spoiled him too. ”I have met some of the people in his department they also have some weird hair.” she agreed. She smiled at the way it was there. She liked it. ”Oh well I will have to start telling you things then, not that I know a lot but you know…”

It was not as though she had many friends either, but she was quite fond of Noah. He also seemed ready to support her dreams and she found that to be very sweet and the sort of thing a friend was supposed to do.”No it’s just me. I am hoping that maybe mom will simply want o keep it forever and I can do what I want.”She shrugged. ”I think I would like to run a sanctuary.” She said deciding now as they walked to link her arm with his her elbow bending into his. ”Educational and good for the creatures… you know?”

"It was cool," Noah said nonchalantly. He did not elaborate - if he did, he would never stop talking. "Oh, it was in Melbourne though. I've lived there all my life."

"They didn't understand muggle culture at all, since both of them had only ever lived in wizarding areas of England," he explained regarding his parents. "They had to sign some documents to buy our house, and they had never seen a pen before. My mom asked if it was some sort of quill-wand combo, forgetting that muggles use neither. She genuinely didn't know how to use it, either, and my dad was no help. The realtor almost carted them both off to the loony bin before dad got out his wand and used Everte Statum. Then he tried to call the police, so dad had to Confundo him." He shook his head. "It was a mess, the ministry got involved and everything. The realtor's memory had to be erased, and that was only the first problem my parents made."

Noah did not say that e-mails were more efficient than owls. "I've visited dad at work before and I never get through the place without seeing someone with weird hair." He smiled when she said she would tell him things. "I'm all ears." People had told Noah before that he was a great listener.

When Kenna said she hoped her mom would just keep the inn, Noah wondered if veelas had particularly long lifespans. He really didn't know much about them - he would have to read up to make sure he didn't say anything stupid in front of Kenna and her mom. "A sanctuary sounds awesome," he said, "I think you should go for it. What would be the first creature you'd save?"

Kenna smiled. ”Who knew we lived so close and didn’t know it.” She said as she shook her head. ”I was homeschooled… I guess, my classes were always at the inn. My mom taught me… we had someone who worked the front his name was Kingsley… and my mom would teach me in in her office at the inn. Then I would go play with the other kids in the magical neighborhood. I think I would have liked living in a muggle neighborhood,” Kenna would have liked living anywhere.

She smiled at him as he told the story about his parents. She covered her mouth to suppress the giggle that came with imaging the scene he described about his parents not knowing how to use the pen. She could only imagine how that would have gone. ”that sounds like it was a huge deal… oh my goodness.” She couldn’t imagine how it was. Her parents had neve attempted to integrate into the muggle society… but she imagined it would be the same. ”What made them decide to live with the muggles. I mean its really cool, but what made them do that?” And send him to the muggle school. Maybe they wanted him to be more cultured? That made sense.

That much was true, people at the ministry were always in a rush. ”Well I try not to look for them, instead I like to make up stories about the people I see.” She said with a smile. She smiled at him ”There are always a lot of crazy hair… and those who can make it different colors… that would be cool I think.” She wouldn’t mind having purple hair- if only to make her mom freak out a little bit. She let out a long sigh, one that simply reflected how tired the exams had made her.

”I don’t know I suppose the first creature who needs it?” She said as she thought about it. ”I wouldn’t mind a winged horse, or maybe a hippogriff?” The thought made her smile.

Noah wondered what exactly Kenna would have liked about living in a muggle neighborhood, but he didn't ask. The longer they stayed on this topic, the more likely it would become apparent that Noah should've just stayed in the muggle world. "Yeah, maybe."

He rolled his eyes when she asked how his parents decided to live with muggles. "They truly had no idea what they were doing," he explained. "They came from England, where wizarding areas are far removed from muggle areas. So they basically assumed that since the Ministry was in Melbourne, the whole city must be wizarding." Their decision to send him to muggle primary school was a sound one, on its face: they wanted to immerse him in muggle culture, so that when he grew up, he could comfortably live anywhere - wizarding or muggle. They had simply miscalculated.

"You should definitely open the sanctuary," he reaffirmed after she told him what animals she'd like to save. He could tell by the way she talked that she was really passionate about it.

The two of them continued talking all the way back to the Spencer dorms, and by the time they parted ways, Noah was no longer in a foul mood.
