The start of the new term often left Anthony Feeling a bit hopeful and excited, he was always interested in seeing why they wanted to take the class, or what they planned on doing once they left. The text was simple. He anted this year to be straight forward and easy for them to make sense of when they were reading. Just enough information to spark a discussion. That would be the bulk of the classwork this year, the discussion. It was about how the law was carried out and part of that is discussing the law. There was theory and ethics and it could absolutely messy- but absolutely thrilling to talk about.

He had always enjoyed the lively discussion in the bullpen. It was also how he had gotten into the cult tracking. He had enjoyed the discussions a figuring out he way to break a part the cells that popped up. It was amazing. Tracking was something he had loved, the thrill of the hunt. He smoothed the front of his robes as he walked into the class room. ”Good morning everyone.” Anthony was always cheerful. He walked to where his desk was and he smiled. ”I am Professor Wolfe, as in Big bad.” The joke was one he liked to tell often, his daughter thought it was a horrible joke.

”Welcome to Magical Law and Government. For those of you who don’t know, before teaching I had a career as an Auror that specialized in the make up and tracking of dangerous cults.” He had plenty of scars for his trouble too. ”I figure I will let you all introduce yourself. Tell me your name, year and what you hope to gain from this class.” He liked to know their expectations it was just as important as knowing what his were.

Out of all his possible enrollment choices this perhaps was the most surprising for himself to pick up. He had managed to at least arrive in the class on time and was situated in a seat that had been within about the second row in the third chair. He liked being a bit of an odd ball it seemed even when it came to seating arrangements. It was really what ever fit his fancy at the time. While he understood this was going to involve the idea of Law, Government, and perhaps the various articles that are set in place or currently in draft, the biggest interest for him perhaps was what the process had been for those of non-human relations.

As he nestled into his chair and waited for the Professor's acknowledgment towards the class body a smirk plied onto his lips at the joke made. Touché, Professor, Touché. Already took the joke he was going to make with his own name which meant he couldn't do it this time around, that'd just be very bad looking in general and he knew it. Alexander's head canted towards the side at the moment that Professor Wolfe explained that he was once an Auror, a strange change of pace but not something unexpected, he imagined. A few had to have experience before they became a Teacher somewhere.

Since he was never one to sit around and wait for someone else to take the lead he decided to start it off with the usual flair that was, well, Alex. Hands pressed against the top of the table as he pushed himself up and to attention which had only been followed by a casual wave to the entire class and Professor alike. "Heya there, for those that don't know - The Names Alexander. Kind of like 'The Great'. . . . Yea, no sorry that didn't go as well as I expected. You can just call me Alex much easier for everyone." His hand pushed through his raven hair to slide the locks away from his face. "I am a Sixth year and what I want to get out of the class. . . Well, I honestly don't know. Maybe hoping to just understand the system a bit better especially involving helping out people of Non-Human origin." Afterwards he'd nonchalantly shrug and sit back down.

Not that he didn't have personal reasons for seeking that out but he never knew what he was expecting until he got into the class itself.

Cass had barely arrived just before the teacher, having spotted him as she neared the classroom, she offered him a cheeky grin and salute before scurrying up ahead. Inside, her gaze swept across everyone who was seated, before a wicked smirk cut across her features and she casually took up a spare seat that was next to Alex, give him a nudge as she passed him, before plopping down and setting her books on the desk.

This was one of many subjects she'd excelled in previously, which would probably be a surprised to a lot of people who still didn't know very much about her except that she was that weird Irish girl who had far too much energy. A giggle-snort escaped her at the terrible joke from the teacher; yep, she liked him already.

As he asked for people to introduce themselves, Alex beat her to the punch, causing her gaze to narrow at him. Oh, she was going to have to be quicker in any other classes together. No way she could have the spotlight taken from her already. That just wouldn't do... even if she didn't actually give a flying damn in reality.

Once her fellow troublemaker had finished, the redhead then jumped to her feet easily, casting a brilliant smile to the teacher and around the rest of the class.

"Hi there! I'm Cassandra Sullivan. Or Cass, Cat, Kitty, Red, or even 'hey you'," The young woman spread her arms slightly as though she was on display, "As you can all no doubt tell, I'm not from around here. Moved over from the UK late last year and finishing my schooling here in two-K-eighteen. My reasons for taking this class are kind of personal, but we can just round it off to having an investment in knowing the justice system for the bad folk out there." She gave a small nod, and then sat down. Easy done.

Simon was in his usual seat, a middle row and slightly off to the side. In this case, if one was facing the front he was sitting on the right. In his eyes it was a good place to sit and escape notice - until the teacher (whose jokes were about as bad as Simon's) asked them all to introduce themselves.

Bugger. Simon was expecting class participation this soon into the session. Well, he certainly was not volunteering to go first.

The first introduction was a guy. That was fine. Then there was a girl with way too much energy when it came to this class, who despite sharing just about everything else about herself was reticent about sharing her reasons why. That was fine too; Simon didn't want to share his reasons either.

Then it was his turn.

He pulled himself almost up to his full height with just a fraction of a slouch and said, "I'm Simon Bican. That's Bican, not Bacon, so please professor, no huffing and puffing and blowing me down, thank you very much." No doubt there were some fine Bacons out there - see Francis and Kevin - but Simon was not one of them. Enough people had made the pronunciation mistake to be an annoyance he liked to head off. "I'm a sixth year, a Sturt, and I hope to gain good grades from this class."

He glared around the classroom as if daring anyone to question his answer before sitting back down. Simon did have his reasons for taking this class, but he wasn't going to share them like this was group therapy and he had feelings.

It was no shock to anyone that Teddy was front and center with his reading notes, texts, notebooks, and writing utensils splayed out before him. He always wanted to take note of things to remember and have materials to recall information for the discussions ahead of him. Since he spent the summer at school, he worked on reading ahead so that he could prepare for his STINGRAYs. So, his book was already covered with flags and his first set of reading notes was already prepared for the course texts.

He was very excited to speak with some depth about the nuances of government and law in the wizarding world, with a particular fondness for international government and politics. He wanted to know how governmental systems worked and affected people and how people went about changing things through these systems.

So, when the professor (who was definitely one of the most distracting he had ever encountered) asked what they wanted from the course, Teddy had to take a minute and compose himself. How would he put to words his passion for understanding how it was that people organized themselves in societies, created governments with rules and regulations, and helped each other to strive? What could he say to bring up how fascinating it was when people used these kinds of systems to hurt others? What could he engage with without sounding like the total geek he was?

Three students had spoken before him and Teddy would have to go eventually, especially at the hot seat he so often enjoyed. Simon was, per usual completely sarcastic and avoidant in his answer (and that went without mentioning the innuendo he had made at the professor), nothing less than Teddy would expect, the other two providing somewhat elusive answers related to their personal experience. They didn't sound like such nerds like he was going to. He got up, taking a deep breath and allowing it to escape him slowly, eyeing Simon to take note that he knew what he had said. "My name is Theodore Spellman, but you may call me Teddy." He then paused for a moment reviewing his thoughts.

"I'm in this course because I find government fascinating and want to explore how it functions and doesn't function for the benefit of sentient creatures. I want to delve into the depths of subject matter and begin to understand the systems we live and don't live in and see how people change them and perpetuate how they already exist. In particular, I'm interested in how different governmental systems work around the world and want to know more about them." He then sat down, realizing just how much of a nerd he sounded like. How did he still manage to have friends like this?

Orion wasn't really sure why he was even taking this class. He was someone that liked to slink down in the back row, duck his head and sleep his way through boring lectures. But someone very wise, likely someone he was related to, had once told him of the importance of knowing the world he had come from. And that was the reason why he had started taking this course two years ago.

The professor seemed knowledgable. He knew how to make jokes that made his fellow students smile. Orion just kept his face as straight as he could. He listened as others introduced themselves. Some he knew, others he only knew by face. Hearing their names made them more familiar.

The guy before him spoke up and Orion felt as though the boy had taken the words right out of his mind. Was he a mind-reader or something? He had to be a nerd. Just his fanciful language spoke volumes about that alone.

Slouched back in his seat, arms casually folded across his chest, he listened up as Teddy completed his little speech. It felt kind of silly being the lumbering jock that went after the brainy nerd, but Orion was used to that here by now.

"I'm Orion Arua-Karras. Seventh year. Bourke." He could have just left it at that, but there was a reason he was in this class, right? "I'm here to learn about magical law and government because that's some strange world I did not grow up in." There. It wasn't as brainy as Teddy's response or as zippy as Simon's or as cheerful as the others', but it was his alone.

Bourke ☆ Third Year Blackbird

Allowing Roe to get the door for her, Morgan took a moment to make sure everything was in her backpack before wheeling herself inside. Her arms were starting to hurt; she'd fallen out of practice back home during the break. Her friends always wanted to push her, because they thought it would help. But it only made it so she lost some of the strength in her arms, and it was painful for the first couple of days until she was used to so much movement.

She wheeled herself down the hallway, eyes searching for the classroom. The third year had to grab Roe by the vest as he went to keep walking passed the door. She couldn't blame him, she hadn't seen it at first either, but it wasn't a habit she could allow him to make.

The dog pulled open the door, and she wheeled inside, realizing she had arrived before the teacher. She was quick to select a desk that was out of the way, so as not to get in any one's way and, once she'd selected it, Roe pulled the chair away, allowing her to roll up to the desk.

As Roe sat down beside her, his chocolate brown eyes never leaving her face, she pulled out her materials, organizing her desk the way she preferred it.

As the teacher walked inside, Roe's eyes left her just for a moment to look at the man, before dismissing him as unimportant and looking back at her, waiting for an order.

The third year giggled quietly at his bad joke, before looking around as the students began to participate. First was a boy, who seeemed to be a rather 'cool' sort of person. Second was a girl with far too much energy, thirdly a boy, rather the opposite of the girl. Next to last was another boy, rather eloquent, followed by a short-spoken boy.

Seeing it was her turn and, unable to stand up, she settled for waving. "I'm Morgan Ohara, one word, not O'hara, and this is Roe. He helps me with stuff." she gestured at the chocolate lab. "I'm a third year, and I hope to find a possible career in this class."

As the students filtered in and found their seats he thought about the fear that many teachers had.  Teenagers profiled like sociopaths- it ws a rather funny given he had worked with actual sociopaths.  People often confused psychopaths and sociopaths but there was a distinct difference.  For one a psychopath might actually kill you.  Sometimes he wondered why he had decided to teach- he could have done just about anything once he decided that he was not going to be in the field for the sake of is daughter.  Tony had been a little disappointed she was not taking his class, but he supposed she learned enough from him over the years.

Tony marked on his list as they introduced themselves and he smiled.  ”So it seems as though we have all come to the class with expectations.”  He did like that they had good expectations for the class.  ”So my expectations are simple.  This class will be discussion based.  There is a lot that we can learn from one another just as we can the actual reading.  My expectation is that you all challenge yourself.”  He said.   ”I also expect that in this classroom we treat one another with respect.”  He found that to be just as important as learning.  This was a safe space to study the law.

” any general questions for me about the syllabus or the text?”  In addition to the text they all had to get the newspaper.  He wanted to discuss current events.  ”Usually we would used this first part of class to discuss current events.”  he paused.  ”Today however I will use it for questions and answers.”  he had a copy of the text on his desk.  Magical Law: A Practical theory.  It would be a good term.

Mairead took her seat among her peers and gave a glance around the room.  She never thought this would be a terribly popular class, and her assumption had been correct.  It didn't bother her too much, nor did the fact that nearly all the students in here, as she learned from introductions, were of the senior years.  It made more sense for them.  Her age were still expected to be digging into the "fun" courses.  It seemed many in this room had a terrible sense of what was funny.

No matter.  She had reasons of her own to be here.  She smiled and gave a quiet giggle at their terrible name jokes and puns.

She was twirling a pencil in her fingers as she watched everyone else, taking a lull to stand up herself and smile at everyone, holding the pencil between both her clasped hands.  "I'm Mairead Townsend, and I am in my fourth year.  I would like to gain an understanding of the inner workings of both the law and government."

She took her seat once more, gazing over at one of the people who'd made the terrible name jokes--Alexander?  His particular comment about aiding non-humans had caught her attention.  He'd be someone to watch in thsi class.

Soon enough everyone had their go, and Big Bad as he'd joked was back to talking, leading them through an introduction of sorts.  When he asked about a syllabus she mentally rolled her eyes at him.  'Yeah, like where is the syllabus?' she thought.  Either he'd never made them, or had done a slack job of making sure all those enrolled had it.  Her smile never wavered as she listened, despite her thoughts.

Alexander's smile grow as Cassandra passed by with a nudge before sitting down next to him. He shook his head trying to hold in the laughter from how playful the young woman was, even when it came to class. That was fine it meant that the fun of the course would be ramped up even more and the people didn't know that yet, but oh, will they know soon! It seemed most of the students seemed to have an actual definite on why they wanted to take the class which left him a bit to consider his own answer, was that what he wanted? He understood his own personal reasons for why, but was it truly a reason?

It even seemed someone as young as a Fourth year had been interested in the class as his eyes gently narrowed to get a slight glance towards the young girl. She seemed. . . Familiar but the features weren't clicking. Something enough told him to avoid staring too long and such he tuned in further into Professor Wolfe's following query. His hand rose up as he waited to be called on before fully asking his question. "Now, in terms of current events, does that also mean laws and policies that are being brought into question but aren't fully decided on or are having an issues with having a heavy opposition from one end?" This was more of a curiosity for him, how much are they willing to assist those still being targeted despite being deemed 'Beings'.

Once everyone introduced themselves, the teacher began to speak again. He seemed nice enough, and she hoped he would stay as such. Morgan tapped on her numb leg, listening as he spoke. She was very glad that he said this would be discussion based; if it wasn't, she wouldn't be able to take it, and would have to find another class to do.

She found herself thinking on any questions she might have, while listening to the other student's questions. Finally, she raised her hand hesitantly and, once she was called on, she asked, "Will we be focusing on just magical current events? Just Australian? Or will we be looking at Muggle and non-Australian current events."

Cass had to admit, she was interested in the students who wanted to know about the workings of the Magical Government, as well as Alex's interest in knowing more about the laws regarding non-humans. That one technically also applied to her in a way, but since she and Cate were listed as human currently, she was fairly clear. But, if there came a day when her status was officially changed, then she wouldn't mind also knowing what her rights were.

The question of current events caused her brow to raise, however, and she would have asked what he meant exactly, except that other students already got in ahead of her again. Instead, she thought about the events she knew of, the only one flashing in her mind reminding her a little too much of her life running from dangerous people. He had said it would be question and answer time this lesson though as well, so she thought a moment before raising her hand until the teacher called on her.

"Will we be learning more about the Ministry as a whole and the various departments there? Or will there be a chance to choose a particular focus to study, like Aurors or something? Also, will there be any officials coming in to share their experiences with us over the year?"

They had good questions.  That gave him hope honestly.  The more he thought about the way things were today, and how they had been over all, he was glad so many students had taken an interest in the laws and the morality and ethics that seemed to be called into question more and more these days.  The importance of understanding these things was crucial and he only hoped that he would do justice to the class.  He smiled.  ”Current events has no limits on it at this point.  The only thing I require is that all arguments are respectful.  I think it’s important for you, now more than ever, to learn how to discuss what it happening.  In government no matter where you are there will be topics you feel passionately about and not all of them will be well received.”  That was how it went in the world of government.  He nodded at Morgan.

”Yes, its just as important to know what is happening around the world as it is locally.  I was often called to consult on cases all over- current events in those countries would affect my job.  Often events in other countries can cause chain reactions.”  that was always something to see.

”Excellent question Cassandra.”  he said with a smile.  ”this first term is a basic over view.  There will be a project, where you can choose what you want to study.  There is some shadowing and interviewing.  It’s a final project and so something to work on throughout.  It will not serve you to put it off.”  It never was a good idea it was more work than it looked like.  ”I do plan on having some speakers, however it’s a bit based on their schedules.”  The aurors were busy with this fugitive mess and he knew it would be later when they could come in.   Some of the other speakers had schedules that were busy too.  He just kept a pulse on them for when he could expect them.

The questions seemed to be concluded.  ”Now, I think the most important question I will ask you this term is a pretty simple question.  What is Government.”  he asked.  Opening the floor up for the students.

That was a fair assessment towards his question! While he wasn't ignorant of a few things here and there some stuff did manage to slip under the radar or even not come across his perusal. Too many things that could effect a few people that he had considered friends most likely due to how everything seemed to shift in recognizing certain races over the other or more importantly the different things being done by the government to better offer up protections. He listened to the other questions brought up and the connected answer by the Professor. So they're going as far as world events as well? That seemed interesting though not unexpected, other places had different views about how things should be ran and approached after all.

"Project, huh?" Choosing a subject piece wasn't too hard as long as he knew where to look for the information he needed. Alex considered he'd need to put some heavy thought into it when he got the chance back at his dorm. At least there he could concentrate a bit better while on a beanbag.

Then the question of 'What is Government' rolled along and his head tilted. It was a common question he'd expect to be inquired but it hadn't been lost on him the importance of such an inquiry. "Government, It's a guiding body of a nation or people that decides not only its laws, regulations, and policies but also is tasked with defending those people and their interests. It's also an ambassador from its own people to others in an effort to cultivate diplomacy on their behalf but also to ensure that there is connection. A... Bit of a broad slap together, but how it's carried out is different based on the type of Government."

Hine had remained quiet, trying to just blend into the background, and not make a fuss. She had only selected this class to look good on ministry applications, and now she felt entirely out of her depth. She realised very quickly she had no concept whatsoever on how the Australian ministry worked. The New Zealand one was a tiny office to enforce laws, but not much else.
Her notes were made up entirely of questions that she would look up later, in messy handwriting. She shook her hand, trying to work out a cramp, and realised it looked like she was raising her hand to speak. What was the question? What was the Professor asking? Uh....
"Uh... Government is the people we give permission to tell us what to do."
Intermally, she cursed herself. That was the dumbest thing she had ever said.
