Adele was late. Of course she was.

Students had already found their way into the classroom, the good ones sitting nicely in the front. Others lounged at the back of the room, feet on desks. With a brisk wave of her wand and an irritable frown, Adele pushed those feet back to the floor.

"Alright. I know I'm not your usual professor." Adele sat herself on the desk, facing the class. "I hope none of you heard there would be a sub and got yourselves all excited to bludge."

She crossed her legs, looking out at the students with a cool smile. This was a nightmare for some of them, she knew. Some of these kids had outstanding library fines, and others had been blasted for mistreating books. Maybe subbing this class wasn't going to be the worst thing in the world.

"Today we're going to go through some more recent history. Namely, the events that brought about the Sentient Species Act, and the impact that had on Australian wizarding culture." Lazily, Adele waved her wand at the blackboard behind her. Chalk rose from the ledge, beginning to illustrate two house elves: one clearly in slavery, the other free.

"The relevant pages in your book are 39-42. Have a read through, and while you do, think about the following." Adele pointed back to the blackboard where the following questions were being written up:

Why was the Sock Rebellion an important moment in Australian wizarding history?

How does the Sentient Species Act make Australia different compared to  European wizarding societies?

What other species, aside from house elves, benefited from the Sentient Species Act?

What negative impact did the freedom of house elves have? For house elves themselves? For the general wizarding community?

How could things have been done differently to minimise negative impact?

If the Sock Rebellion had been a failure, what do you suppose may have happened in the future? What would wizarding society look like now?

"When you've got your answers, hands up and share with the class." Adele added. "Ten points if you're not completely wrong. Twenty if I can tell you've got a brain."

With an eagle eye over the class, Adele put her wand down. It was time for a beverage, she felt. All she had was water, but she'd found a martini glass---so at least it looked fancy. She poured it as she waited for the students to kick their brains into gear. This wasn't so bad...

[OOC: To respond, just have your student put their hand up and assume Adele called on them, and then have them share their answer with the class. Students only need to answer one question, and questions don't need to be answered in order---pick one that would interest the student. And remember---the answers should be in line with your character's academic ability! Have fun!]

Sturt Blackbird
16 year old Halfblood Human ☆ She/Her

"I'm going to be late!"

Samhain groaned, rushing down the hall. Her uniform was ruffled, and as she ran she ran her fingers through her hair. It was still wild, unfortunately, but there wasn't much she could do about it. She'd already missed breakfast, and it had taken her forever to get out of that Merlin-damned closet. Why was she such a target?

At home, her father targeted her. Here, the bullies picked on her. She wasn't safe, anywhere! But, now she had something to keep her going. Samhain had found a young Quokka on her way to school this year, and had taken it in. Thankfully, she'd gotten permission to keep it as a pet, as she didn't already have one.

She skidded to a stop in front of the History of Magic classroom, panting, and took a moment to try and make herself presentable. Then, the scrawny girl would hurry inside, ducking her head to avoid the other kids eyes, before sitting down in a desk near the middle of the classroom. Here, hopefully, the teacher wouldn't pay much attention to her.

Thankfully, she arrived only moments before the teacher did, sitting down at almost the exact moment the door opened. The sixth year pulled out her supplies for the lesson, arranging them on her desk. Once that was done, she would begin to read the blackboard, before opening her book to the appropriate pages. As she read, she reached into her bag, absentmindedly petting Bumble as the Quokka dozed.

Once she was finished, she looked back up at the blackboard. Then, looking around, she would hesitantly, before raising her hand. She would flush when she was called on, and answer, "T-the Sentent S-Species Act makes Aus-Australia different from other European Wizarding So-societies in that Hou-House Elves have eq-equal ri-ights to humans, and loyalty bo-bonds are forbidden. In mo-most other European Wi-izarding Societies... um, house elves are bond-bonded to their Wizarding families, but... that's illegal here. And, he-here, they have minimum wage, holidays, and oth-other workplace rights that their Eur-European count-counterparts don't have." She said softly.

Once she'd finished, she'd look back down at her desk, face flushed red.

15 year old Muggleborn Human ☆ She | Her | Hers

Savannah, to her chagrin, had not been the first student through the classroom door, though she also had not been the last, which was a relief. Indeed, she quickly spotted the glowing mane of Mae, and made her way to her friend’s side, grinning brightly at the elder student as she settled into the seat on her other side. Leaning forward, she waved shyly at the Flinder’s student on the other side – though she was not confident she knew his name; she was terrible with names – she had seen him around enough to know he was friendly and that Mae liked him. Savannah was not prone to gossiping with her (limited) friends, so she was more familiar with people’s faces than the names and gossip that went with them.

Turning her eyes up as the teacher joined them, she followed the instructions and pulled her book to her and open, flicking to the pages in question and reading the words she was well rehearsed in, having read the book cover to cover several times since she bought it. Despite that, and her solid knowledge in what were contained in the pages of the book, Savannah had never been prone to speaking up in class. This meant she rarely gained points for her house, but she did well on exams and quizzes when they were put before her. Savannah listened avidly to the answers that were given by her classmates, taking in the information they added that went beyond the text with a thirst; she glanced to the teacher to determine reaction on such additions – were they true? False? Something else entirely? – she would likely research the interesting tidbits she hadn’t heard before in her free time. For now, she soaked up the answers.

Flinders ☆ Fourth Year ☆ StudentShell
14 year old Halfbreed Veela ☆ She/Her

Mairead was sitting in her seat, close enough that she could see the board, but not in the front.  She liked to blend into her surroundings, sit somewhere advantageous to her on a scholarly level as well as a social one.  She sat somewhere near the middle of the room, twirling her hair around her finger as she waited for the substitute to arrive.  She wasn't thrilled to have her professors changing up  on her this early in term--especially with how many new staff members there were this year.  It was disgusting and upsetting for the girl.  She liked predictability. She liked familiarity.  It felt like half the school had changed over in just a few weeks.  She couldn't continue with her expectations as they should have been.

Eventually the librarian walked in and the fourth year couldn't help but roll her eyes.  She was late, of course.  And what was in that martini glass of hers?  Was she drinking in class?  What the hell was this?  A sour look was fixed upon her face as the lesson began.  Still, she couldn't find a hint of resentment for the day's lesson--it was important to her on a far more personal level than that of most students.  The Sock Rebellion and The Sentient Species Act.  She opened her book and read through the pages, occasionally peeking up at the board to refresh what was to be asked of them.

One by one hands began to lift, and students were called upon to answer varied questions.  She couldn't help the smug grin as one mentioned the varied species outside of house elves that were included in the SSA--including Veela.  Veela like her mother.  Veela like herself, even if she was only half.

Her own hand soon lifted and she was called upon by the librarian. She lowered her hand before she began to speak.  "While it was, and is, largely positive, not all who were freed and given equal rights knew how to cope with them.  House Elves, who had never known a need for money, let alone managing it, had seldom if ever been allowed the luxuries and choices of their witch and wizard counterparts, now had these things available and even pushed at them.  How could one who had never needed money be expected to know how to budget, where to spend?  Or know where their tolerance was for alcohol, or to avoid anything addicting?  Furthermore, there were those that were so old the couldn't simply adjust to the new lifestyle.  All they'd ever known was that their role in life was lesser, to serve, and they didn't know how to navigate outside of the restrictions placed upon them.  In some ways, it was like taking a domesticated, captive animal and dropping it alone in the wild with the expectation that it will know how to find food, shelter, and otherwise take care of itself, when it won't."  She paused.  "For wizard-kind, it was largely inconvenient.  Slaves in their homes for centuries were now to be freed, and if to keep their work, they must be paid, equal to themselves.  They now had to worry about holidays, sick leave, and all the things society has always benefited for those it saw on top of society."

Ilia trotted through the halls of Tallygarunga, heading towards her first class: History of Magic. She couldn't wait! She was excited to learn about the history of magic, anything about magic to be honest. But history was fascinating! And she loved how the textbooks were organized, with lots of pictures and reasonable placement of text.

The First Year student grinned as she found the classroom she was looking for, stepping inside. She wasn't late, nor was she early, just on time. Just the way she liked it. Like always, she went to the desk in the front row, directly against the wall across from the door.

After sitting down, she pulled out her materials. All of her writing utensils went on the right upper corner of her desk, her textbook on the left, and her journal in the middle of the desk, opened to a page already labeled with the date and number, turned at precisely thirty-five degrees.

She began to read the pages that they were told to, jotting down notes. Once she was done, she raised her hand, waiting to be called on. Once she was, she would clear her throat, before speaking. "Instead of releasing all of the house elves at once, they could have released them in groups. When they released all of them, there wasn't a chance for the wizards to get used to house elves not being servants, and the house elves didn't have anywhere to go. But if they released them in groups, then people would have been able to get used to house elves being a part of their communities. And house elves could have been given lessons to teach them things they didn't know, that weren't necessary when they were servants."

Adele didn't even look like she was listening as the students began to give their answers. There was no way she could be seen to do this well, otherwise Alan would be bailing her up to cover classes all year. That didn't mean she wasn't going to do a good job, she just wasn't going to look like she was doing a good job. There was a fine line there. On the table beside her, she had a book of overdue loans that she was calculating, looking down at that rather than up at the students talking.

"Precisely, Ms Eros." she said to @Samhain Eros, when the girl finished talking. "House Elves here are given rights above and beyond what is expected by law in European wizarding societies. Ten points to Sturt." Adele hadn't looked up once while speaking, and frowned to herself as she scribbled a number next to a considerably overdue book. She would have to chase that up later.

A slow smile crossed her lips as @Mairead Townsend began to speak, only the slightest hint that the librarian was taking anything in at all. In the back of the room, a collection of rowdy students had decided to take advantage of her inattention, and were busy balling up small wads of paper to launch across the classroom. Spitballs, ugh. Was there really anything more gross? Adele tapped her wand lazily, and the first wave of  spitballs launched stopped dead in the air and fell harmlessly to the floor.

"The three of you will be scrubbing under the desks this afternoon." Adele sighed in the direction of the troublesome students, still not having looked up. "But that is an excellent answer, Ms Townsend. There was very little understanding or consideration for how house elves would cope with such a sudden culture shock. The arrogance of wizarding kind, and muggles as well, has also been that anyone of any other kind should be lucky to have the same rights, freedoms and experiences as themselves. While we could never condone the slave-like conditions of house elves prior to the Sentient Species Act, there was very little thought given to the impact it would have once passed. Ten points to Flinders."

Adele grunted in annoyance. Just how many of these darn books were overdue? Already? The school year had just begun, for crying out loud. If she thought for a second that they were being utilised, maybe she would have been more lenient, but Adele had been in her job long enough to know that most of these books were acting as paperweights or door stops in the dorms.

"They could have been released in groups, yes." Adele replied as @Ilia Collins finished her answer. "But would that have been a true step toward equality? To say that this group of house elves is more deserving of freedom than that group? Even if all are to be eventually released, it sets a dangerous precedent, don't you think? Frankly," Adele sat up, looked away from the book of overdues. "Frankly, we shouldn't give a shit about how it impacted wizards."

"Are any of you here halfbreeds? Usually there's a few of you. But if you're not, imagine for a second that your entire worth is decided not by who you are, but what. That your place in society is designated for you before you're even born. That, whether you like it or not, you will be sent to a family to do their bidding. And you live every day of your existence in subservience to the "elite" and "more deserving" wizarding kind." Adele picked up her drink, and took a sip.

"So you don't even get a chance to prove your worth. You live and die with the expectations of your race, and yes---house elves had a particularly poor lot with the slavery aspect, but they're not alone. Think about how we perceive other "less human" races. Veela. Giants. Even those who were human, but were taken another way by fate. Vampires and werewolves. Ten points to Bourke, Ms Collins."

"With that in mind, how could wizards have made this a smoother transition for house elves? What steps could they really have taken---before even passing the law---to predict and mitigate the negative impact on house elves? And what more could we be doing to ensure greater cohesion between wizards and our non-human societies? Any ideas, Ms Ryan?" Adele looked back down at her overdues book, the question directed at @Savannah Ryan... but she didn't much care who answered.

Mairead smiled, sitting a little straighter.  Despite the librarian being... well, who she was, it was nice to receive some recognition from her, even if she didn't seem to be paying anything much attention.  She rolled her eyes as the woman in question suddenly gave detention to some students somewhere behind herself.  How did she know what they were doing anyway?  Oh well, less trouble for her.

Adele then seemed to turn her attention to Savannah, and Mairead's own eyes followed over to her. She was one of many students who hadn't responded.  It took her off any hooks for the time being.

The teacher didn't even bother to look up at her, which actually helped to lessen the girl's anxiety. It was easier to answer when she wasn't being stared at, and her eyes widened in surprise. Points? She'd earned Points for Sturt? She flushed, and beamed at the same time.

However, she couldn't help but to startle as the woman suddenly stopped a volley of spitballs, assigning detention to the group of students who launched them. She couldn't imagine acting like that in class!

When the woman asked another question, she bit her lip, thinking on it. But the woman hadn't addressed her, so she remained quiet, staring down at her desk, although she listened to see what would be said.

Evidentally, the teacher didn't care for her answer. Ilia flushed, looking down at her desk, fiddling with the buttons on her uniform. She had thought it was a good idea, but the teacher didn't seem to agree.

The young First Year stared at her desk as the teacher continued speaking, her face going redder and redder. She hated being called out in front of other students, so she stayed quiet even as she listened.

However, suddenly she was being given points. Her eyes widened, and her head snapped up as she mouthed, 'ten points to Bourke'? But hadn't she gotten the answer wrong?

As the teacher asked another question, she all-but vibrated in her chair, wanting to answer. But she hadn't addressed her, so she kept her mouth shut.
