Ethan was born in Darwin during a C-section. His mother had been put on bed rest for the last two weeks of her pregnancy due to suspected placenta previa, which is the only reason they were at the hospital at all when she went into labor. It was a very touch-and-go procedure, but both mother and baby made it out alive and safe. It took his mother a few weeks to recover from the surgery and once she was recovered, Ethan's parents took him home to the small town of Marrakai, an hour southeast of Darwin.
Growing up, Ethan was always into anything and everything, keeping up a continual conversation with himself. Their house was always full of talking and laughing and happiness. Ethan's mother taught him all kinds of recipes to try as he was growing up, the two of them baking cookies and making dinner together. A month after his tenth birthday, his mother fell while cooking and Ethan and his dad drove her straight to the hospital in Darwin, where she was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. A few weeks later, she passed away and Ethan and his dad returned home, to a now quiet, dark, empty place. It took a long time for the two of them to start opening up again.
Roughly a year after his mother's death, he got a letter in the mail for a magic school, which made a lot of sense since Ethan had been cooking dinner for him and his father and hadn't opened the cabinet to get the spices a few times and they had just been on the counter where he needed them. The minute he arrived at Tallygarunga, he was in awe of the school. It was large and wonderful and magical and he was like a real life Zatanna from the comics he read! He felt small and insignificant for a minute, but still, he was magic! That was awesome. He realized after a moment that he could be like the wizard Mamargan whose magic makes Shazam actually turn into Shazam. He's pretty sure he gasped and that's what drew the attention of his first friend at school who instantly bonded with him over comics. Together, the two were the superheroes the school didn't need or pay attention to.
After he graduated from Tally, Ethan attended Victoria Magical University for a degree in political journalism for four years. Following his graduation from Uni, he moved back home for a year while he sent out resumes to different magical publications, trying to get a job. It took a year, but he secured a position at Quality Quidditch News, a biweekly magazine that publishes any and all news Quidditch. He packed up from his dad's house, hugged him tightly, and set off in his mom's 1973 Jeep Commando for the long, multiple day drive to Melbourne. He stopped a few places along the way to do silly touristy things, since he'd never been anywhere besides Darwin, Marrakai, and Melbourne for school.
His first month was spent getting used to the job and then the next eleven were spent "editing" articles before they were published in the magazine (aka, a glorified human spell checker). He recently got his first actual assignment for an article all his own and he's extremely excited. He gets to write about the next Quidditch match and he can't wait to prove himself on his first actual assignment!
